With oil at about 95deg (before cooler) she shits at approx 1.7bar at 3000rpm. I have to idle at 1200 to keep the light off.

It is going very rich (black smoke) at that point.
After getting it as good as we could, I advanced the timing at that point from 27 up to 33 and we picked up about 20Nm. Now its prob about 70Nm better than it was in the video and no more black smoke either. Around that point, the power doubled just by changing the jetting.
But yea, after that point, the engine just screams!

Do you have gaskets between the pump and cover?

Yes I do, that is my clearance.
I am running 10W40 diesel/petrol oil so maybe it is getting a little too thin at temp. But lets also not forget that I am pumping more oil up the pushrods than stock due to follower modifications and I am also pumping to the cooler in front of the gearbox on the bulkhead, so I could be experiencing accumulative losses.
I'll do an oil and filter change soon and see if it makes a difference.

I normally use Shell helix hx5 15w40. Works good for me

Good to see the bug running again Tony! I love the new additions (to the roof). Hope you sorted out the oil issues, pumping to the cooler shouldn't affect the pressure much !? My cooler sits below the rear seat and I haven't noticed lower pressure but that said I haven't been looking at it that much for some time.

Was nice to see you and your car and the good Lady at the show.
One mean bug sir.
Would love to see you get the flat spot out, that would make your day.
Maybe run a little quiz here and see if the guys can clear it for you.
Herman
PS, I would say you should move the valve timing off to improve the rev range as a whole, rather then getting max out at all levels

I think the solution is to run sequential ignition instead of wasted spark but that would involve tearing the engine down again and I dont want to do that now, the car is at a point (minus sound system) that I can enjoy it now.
As for improving the rev range.... how many cars are capable of sitting in top gear at 1300rpm and effortlessly cruising around in traffic? If anything the cam timing needs to be retarded, but that will move the power band higher up in the rev range - its fine where it is now.

Thanks Wentzel.
I have been called back to work a full month early, so I have to focus my attention on the house now. The toy will have to wait until I get back in May.

not a farm, but a small holding. Not too far from Klapmuts.
No 4x4 here, just careful throttle work, especially in Winter when I need a decent run up to get the front wheel drive through the uphill mud patch. In summer its all gravel

Here is a quick video which Vader recorded.
Unfortunately, he took another video but it doesnt work, so thats a pity.
None the less, you can see the clutch struggles a bit (or I have too much traction with the 215/45/17 tyres).
Over time, I'll up my rev limiter a bit and get into the habit of changing out of second at 6500 or higher. But thats for another holiday. This holiday is now at an end and I have to start packing things up....
Enjoy the video.
O yes, the finger indicates when I hit 100km/h
