What makes you think I have done this a few times before?

Not as bad an idea as you think.... makes the engine rev a little quicker, but also increases engine noise and piston and ring wear. Depends on what you want.
for a stock standard engine, its a bad idea. If you trying to ring as much performance out of an engine as possible, its a pretty good consideration.

This weather is playing havoc with my plans to work on the fastback.

I will have to drag my engine inside the house and continue working on it there!!!

Still waiting for the sleeves to come back from the engineers, once I have those I can start putting the motor back together again. The pistons seems to have some life left in them - If I get 5000KM more out of this motor I will be happy!

I'm thinking of freshening the cylinder heads up as well by doing the valves and seats - Problem with this is that it's rather difficult finding 1700 valves and seats :?

I will send my heads to the engineers to see what they think of them and whether it would be necessary to do the valves and seats.

Getting there, slowly but surely. :D

Sleeves are back. Cleaned up nicely and rehoned.

Heads are gone in. Waiting to hear what the engineers say about them

Hi Blitz remember Noah built the ark but Engineers built the Titanic................................

That's a great saying IMPI 8)

If Noah was building an ark in the 21st century, he probably would have came on here asked, " Is a Type 1 suitable for the ark or should I build a Type 4." And then everyone would have said, Type4s are kak, except for a few hardcore Type 4 guys

Well, news at last.

The heads have to be redone. The exhaust-valve guides are loose and the exhaust valves are toast - I mean literally toast.

So I will have to splash out some bucks and get it done! :?

The hunt for 1700 valves has started already. :|

1700 use same size exhaust valve as 2L kombi. (33mm).

1700 fuel injected 412 ( and 1700 kombi) use same inlet valve as 2L kombi. (39.3mm).
Early twincarb 411 had 37mm inlet valve.

1800 has larger valves than 2L kombi.

Thanks Dawie.

The guy who's helping me get everything sorted has also put out some feelers, he's a diesel mechanic so he knows his stuff 8)

Bought valves and the other associated hardware from Masterparts.

I hope that I can get the heads before Friday, otherwise will have to wait until the new year and that won't be any fun

A fortunate mistake

So, last week this time I was frantically trying to source valves because I had a deadline with the engineers closing for december etc etc.

I placed an order with Masterparts in CT for valves/seats/guides etc. They didn't have 37mm inlets available, so when I emailed my order through, I asked them to supply me with 2.0 Kombi bits. (39.3mm inlet, 33 exhaust)

Got the parcel from Berco the next day - Checked if everything was there and promptly rushed off to the engineers without a second glance...

Picked up the heads on Friday, they came out nicely - All sandblasted, properly cleaned in and out, new guides, seats - Basically the whole lot.

Yesterday, when I was sitting and checking them out again, I grabbed a ruler and measured the valves.

They are actually the bigger 1800 valves - 41x34mm!!!!!!!

Ran and checked the invoice - according to the invoice, I was sold the smaller (39mmx33mm) 2.0 valves. But it looks like a mistake was made and I received the bigger 1800 valves :D

Oh well, that's how it goes. Sometimes you get the bear, othertimes the bear gets you

I'm in the final phases of cleaning the pistons up, putting the new rings on and then I can start putting everything back together again.

There's 2 months and a bit left for the KKKKKAK -My intention is to have the car there. Convoy woo hoo :hangloose:

If I can at least start the engine before the end of December, I can take the car for tuning by Dirk in January when he opens again, which will provide me with plenty of shakedown time, before the run to the Vaal.

Stay tuned, work is starting again
