Not a stupid question, This Ferdi is Bugoff on the forum, not the same Ferdi as the swapmeet - as above.
Work is getting underway nicely, but I cant say too much now, you will have to wait for episode 4

Love that - "reds cars go faster" chirp - Hope this one does! Beetlefanatic is already nagging that a German Looker is not allowed to be slow!

Episode 4

WARNING - the following scenes may be upsetting to sensitive viewers, parental guidance is advised.

The Notch was spun around on the spit a couple of times to see what would fall out :

Image

Image

nothing but rust!

Then the real inspection started in the harsh light of day.

This is where it gets rough: I even created a complete album for it. The Dark Side should be right at home (so I have heard)

If this was a music forum, the rust album would be the "slit your wrist" variety.... (click on the link below to view, click back once when done)

So staying with the musical theme. In the words of the inimitable Slim Shady - doctor, don't just stand there, operate!

This operation will not be measured in hours, more like days and perhaps even weeks!

Before you view the next set of pictures,
put on a track by Apollo 440, called, stop the rock. But imagine they are singing, stop the ROT :)

Hi guys, i did some more work on the notch today. The floor pans are so to say saved. There were alot of pin holes which i drilled out and welded up. They should be good for another few decades. Next week im going to cut out and replace the heater channels, as the most solid part on them is the fibreglass work that was done on it. Cheers for now, Ferdi.

At least it was a nice day when you took the pictures 8)

The pan looks the same as a beetle, is it or are there real differences?

There are a few differences, you can't use beetle repair floorpan halves unfortunately. :-)

It is a bit wider and longer AFAIK.

I dont think its longer, but it is wider and a different shape. The only real sumularitys is the amount of rust they can harbour. Lol.

Episode 5

A quick recap from last week, John Smith was desperately looking for his ex wife, who used to be his sister's brothers cousin, eehh, sorry, wrong soap. :)

In episode 4, we saw how much rust a superficially good looking ACVW body can harbour, and the hard work of repairing said rust was started.

So what is new this episode?

Some more rust and rot on the pan has been cut out, (if you have ever seen the movie Sixth Sense), I can see dead floorpans

Image

but after a kind donation from a beetle that stood too close:

Image

Aaahhh, much better, and if you know that comes from the PC game Duke Nukem, you also need a life :-)

AD BREAK

Well done Bokke for capturing the Tri-Nations title today. You made us proud!

Program continues :-)

The pinhole rust repair in progress:

Image

To celebrate the repair of the pan, a bottle of the good stuff was opened, no not Moét, NS1 :D

Let's just say it was applied like violence in a Tarantino movie:

Image

Notice the improvement in the left floorpan especially, but also the entire pan:

Image

This should not rust again in my lifetime, unless I park it in a lake!

The interior is also on its way to the upholsterer. Besides the recovering, all new door cards will be made, to get this Notch as good as new. Also got some vented front disks and new pads from Calooker. Will post pics when they go on.

We checked and discussed the potential height of the new seats, and it looks like they will fit and still be able to tilt forward without hitting the headliner.

Anyone know where we can get some new suspension rubbers, is this something volkspares and the likes stock? Where can we take the petrol tank for a good refurb, this one is too far gone for a home DIY "chain" fix.

Thats all for this episode folks, steady progress is what it's about, thanks for watching, till next time.

Exactly which suspension rubbers are you looking for? Nice work on the Notch, it looks like it's being fixed up properly this time around

Regarding the suspension rubbers, anything and everything that was made from rubber basically needs to be replaced.
Transmission mounts - front one is new, two on backorder with Calooker,
New brake hoses - no problem, can source.
New Fuel lines - ditto.
New transaxle boots - Sourced from Calooker.
Engine seal - Calooker
Bump stop rubbers.
Suspension bushes.
Looks like a balljoint refurbishment might also be required.
and hope not, but just in case, the type 3 suspension needle bearing..

Episode 6

I woke up, made a cup of coffee and checked my email. Saw that I had a pic from Ferdi,
SOMEONE HAD STOLEN.... THE DRIVERS SIDE HEATER CHANNEL !!

Image

Ferdi says he didn't hear anything, but I don't know if I should believe him :-)

I rushed over there, and after a bit of searching, we found some footprints, which led us to the evidence:

Image

The perp must have been disturbed in the act, and just left the stuff and ran. Sheesh, JHB is not for sissies

Fortunately, ferdi happened to have some spare heater channels cut from an unfortunate fasty  .

So the hard work continued:

Cut that @#$@# out !!

Image

Image

Now lets replace the missing pieces - talk about a tough puzzle..

First, the frame around the pan -

Image

Image

and now, the moment of truth, mating the fasty channel to the notch -

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

and suddenly : drumroll......... TADAAAH - :hangloose: :flash: :hangloose:

Image

Next up was the door that come off this rusted side.

I was pretty sure that a replacement door might have to be sourced.

Image

Image

EINA!!

But I was feeling lucky Image

Image

Image

Now, for the other side :?

Image

I also discussed colours today with the upholsterer, we finalized everything except the headliner, so not too long and work will start on the interior!
