John, keep up your interesting questions, you will be amassed how many "Lurkers" you provide answers too, each one saving another Aircooled VW.

I know, I learn new things here every day.

The reason for saying "double check the valve seats"is because this is a weak point in the type 4 engine, I've seen a few type 4's and they all had valve seats coming loose, a tell tale sign is when you need to adjust the valve lash all the time. This is truly one of the most important things to check and a job to do whenever possible. The one head I had in my hands had hammered the seat into the head until the valve was no longer seating, but only riding the rocker arm constantly and the previous owner had actually ground away most of the rocker to try an get more clearance.

in short 80-85 is the coil, this should go to your button and to ground.
30-87 should come from your fuse box and then head off to the lights.

Here the wiring diagrame as needed,

PS, it has a colour key on all the wires.

Good luck

Modifications done afterwards to the wiring wo'nt be on the original diagram. (Twin hooter relays, spotlights, electric fuel pump, etc, added by some previous owner).
Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.
Do'nt assume anything- (While doing fault-finding).

The best then is to find there use by association.

VW always used the same colour wire for a particular item, so the left lights will always have a colour code, same the right ect.ect.

Now red would be powder supply wire, something that needs power at all times, such as the power to the fridge in a trailer, would be pin two on your plug.

The brown is normally used for lights, so I would say its for a interior light, maybe in the engine compartment for night repair, or maybe also for the back door interior light, or door switch.

My way of thinking, maybe it helps....
