Ditto to what everyone said about this project...and yes a buggy maybe something you build from autozone parts...but that is what gives you the choice of how you want to your buggy to look, and not to a specific style, and it still looks good...thats what i liked about building my buggy was that i wanted to make the buggy look differant from its normal ''ugly'' workhorse kestral type buggies and actually make it look good...But anyway this buggy REALLY does inspire me to finish my studies redo the it like you

More Pine,

Jammer ek is so voorbarig man.

Ek waardeer jou tyd.

Groete Hannesb

So of course you are wondering why this thread has been inactive for almost 6 weeks!???

It is all HER fault!! http://www.aircooledvwsa.co.za/viewtopi ... atest+ride "

UPDATE 21/09/09

It has been a while, but it is already 3 weeks closer to summer than the 1st of September, the days are nice and warm again and sun sets a bit later so hopefully I'll get some momentum with the HW2 project! :drunks:

I have, unfortunately, missed the first target date, namely Ferdie's Swop Meet in which I wanted the chassis to be completed + engine running + brakes working but actually it is not too far from just that.

By now the cat is out of the bag with the KC (Khaki Cruiser), which came across my way a bit unexpected, and she has indeed claimed her arm and leg in more ways than one. HW2 has since sacrificed a cylinder head to keep the old lady on the road, but I went to Piston Ring yesterday with the sole purpose to get a replacement, and I got one indeed!

I also got a nice set of DRLA's, so the set of 36DCD's with linkage + air filters + manifolds might be up for grabs soon. PM me if interested, just remember they will most probably not fit inside a standard Beetle, but I am sure a Ghia and Bus won't be a problem.

Below this clips of the DCD's in question, in action (if that makes any sense?) ....

Stay tuned

It just jumped in front of me! :?
Image

THe curse of HW2 goes on with no end. Just as soon as the piggy bank status changes from 'starvation' to 'thanks for the snack, still hungry', something else (aircooled) jumps in front of me...

Image

Thanks to Skymac for the help with towing it back from the Free State to GP today! :hangloose:

Sorry, HW2 - a little bit more time in the flat below the house, OK? :(

There will be a HUGE model car sale at the Pine stand tomorrow in Silverton. Bring pocket money. Bring LOTS of pocket money, please!

(Be a man. SAVE a starving piggy bank...it is the right thing to do)

Update 8 October 2009 - a re-assembled sub and freezing some carbs

As IMPI have remarked in an earlier thread, the engine of HW2 is back together again after giving some head for the KC...

...perhaps I should re-phrase that

Image

A few weeks ago, the engine of HW2 had to sacrifice a cylinder head for the Khaki Cruiser, who cracked hers, and blew the number 3 plug clean out of it

A replacement head was found at Modderfontein, the engine was taken back to its maker in Orkney, the valves were treated with some IMPI magic, but when the head was put back on the block, we realised that it is a 1300 head... :(

So the head was taken to Oom Piet in Klerksdorp (who reconditioned the previous heads), who then used his magic wand to machine it into a 1600 head!

(and then it was IMPI'ed back onto the block with the correct torque settings and fastening sequence)

THANKS, guys! :hangloose:

Image

The set of DRLA's was one of those lucky-find-but-I-don't-have-the-money-but-what-the-hell-I'll-live-on-bread-and-water-for-the-few-weeks-just-because-I-simply-have-to-have-them-purchases at Modderfontein as well...

Got the linkages from Muderick, they haven't arrived yet but I gave the carbs a quick clean this afternoon:

Image

Image

Image

An old trick I learned from a guy who used to race Fiats and Lancias, is to put the carbs in the deep freeze for a few weeks - it tempers the throttle bodies, super-strengthen the butterfly axles, and de-contaminate the venturis...

Image

The DRLA's will unfortunately not go onto HW2 immediately, as I first need to buy the manifolds and filters (another R1.5K - R2K expense at least). But they WILL go onto HW2, as soon as it is completed and finances are a bit better, to replace the DCD7's (sorry, uncle Bill  )

I have quite a number of things to do on Saturday to HW2, of of the plans is to disassemble the chassis, move it out of the flat, and re-assemble it outside and put it on wheels...

Stay tuned! :hangloose:

Love the DRLA's !

Engine also looking good, note to self **** visiti Impi soon ****

Still pretty sure you can get that chassis out by just turning it on it's side

Yes, that is the plan, but it is simply too heavy for two people to carry if it still has the disks with front suspension, and rear trailing arms with gearbox and drums on. I have to give the front suspension another coat of paint as well, and the gearbox still needs to spend some time with Bugger..

Update 10/10/09

Just a thought... today used to be a public holiday in the (good) old South Africa.... Kruger Day :(

Share a moment of silence with me

Image
Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger (10 October 1825 – 14 July 1904), better known as Paul Kruger and affectionately known as Uncle Paul (Afrikaans: "Oom Paul") was State President of the South African Republic (Transvaal). He gained international renown as the face of Boer resistance against the British during the South African or Second Boer War (1899-1902).
Thank you

Back to the thread

Took the chassis of HW2 apart today - front suspension off, gearbox out, rear drums off. The garden assistant and I took it sideways out of the flat, and for the first time in many months, HW2 could soak up the sun! 8)

Unfortunately it was very windy today, so I couldn't give the front suspension its final black coat, but hopefully within the next week. I want to have it on all four wheels by next weekend, so that I can start with the brakes.

Parked right next to it is the bloody white.... er... YELLOW elephant!
