Your progress is outstanding! I wonder how many SP Beetles are still left??? I saw the pics of the yellow thingymebob and was curious on the hinge of the bonnet...do you know where the hinge's origin may be? Do you maybe know where I can source something similar? My puma's rear deck lid's hinges had seen better days and if I can replace them it will be great. The hinges Jack Wijker now fits to the new Pumas are not similar to mine. I believe my hinges was originally sourced from a Renault Gordini back in 1973...and they are just as scarce.

Another interesting thing to note is where you live...I have friends that lives on the Klapmuts road about 2km passed the "Pigs and pots" or something like that? Joubert and Marlene Conradie? I went there two Decembers in a row now and most probably passed your place without knowing there's an aircooled heart pumping there

I will be saying hi to them again this December as I will passthrough there at some point in time...maybe I can drop in and say hi?

As far as the bonnet hinge of the Spyder is concerned, I have no idea. I will however check for any markings on it 2nite and let you know.

Okay, finally there is some clarity on the type of red the SP came out in.
John Lemon wrote me the following:
"Hi Louis, got back home on Monday night and have just checked through the paint codes I have (which are virtually nil). In a few instances I have a code and no colour and in others the colour but no matching code.

The red used on the SP was "Calypso Coral Red" but I don't have a code for it. Don't know if that will help but let me know.

Okay, so here is the authentic colour: Calypso Coral Red


It's very close to Senegal Red AKA African Red.
Ford also used this colour on the 69 - 70 Mustang.

Interestingly VW most popular colour in those times was called Mars red.
Be very careful about matching colours between different car manufacturers what is called Calypso Coral Red
by ford is not the same as Calypso Coral Red as used by VW. VW themselves have the same colour name but used different pigments in different years of production. Paints are a minefield of conflicting information and the best would be to find a nice unfaded spot on the car (The coverplate below the bonnet for example take it to a reputable paint supplier and have him (or in many cases her) match the colour as per sample

Hey Man, I think I have the drivers side door pannel with the hard door pocket. It is on the red Baja you must have over looked it. I will be at the office Sunday Morning if you want to visit & Pillage

I came to pillage on Sunday but I could'nt find the place.

I did see a red beetle stuck behind some trees just after Berg Rivier Resort though.

I travelled up to the Pniel turn off and then made a U turn and went back home. Nice winter outing in an open buggy. @#$%^^%$# it was cold.
