I realised very soon that it is not really practical riding in a buggy without some protection, mostly from the sun. The pic above was taken in December 2002 (that is me with the hand in the air, and HW1 when it was still blue) crossing the Montagu Pass. Although it was a fun day, I had a few painful days afterwards, because of bad sunburn, mostly on my face, neck and ears.... with the wind in the hair, you simply don't realise how you are burnt!
A few years later I crossed Montagu Pass again in HW1 (now orange) in pouring rain, but with the fibreglass top. Stayed mostly dry, also because I was wearing a rain jacket. The advantage of a fibreglass roof is the little gutter on the side that prevents water running from the roof into the cab area.
HW2 will, however have a simple vinyl 'bikini' tob, which is easy to take off and put on again, very much the same as in the pic below...
The problem I have with a fibreglass roof is that you can never really fix it to the rear and front windscreen without making it too secure, thus making it difficult to take off. HW1 had its roof bolted on for most of the time, even on the day of the accident.

Pine, what do you think a "woody" top would look like on a buggy?? Not on yours obviously but do you think a strip built top could be interesting or just plain kitsch??

Thanks, Mr9A - I put those Beetle tail lights on myself when it was blue, and had it chromed a few years later when HW1 was repainted orange. HW2 will get the same tail lights.
