Consider selling the gearbox and getting a late Audi box I think nice ratios and strength
S4 Box should rock just delete the props haft cable shift can only improve the 914's lousy shifting

It sounds like my dad does want to try the 914 box first... maybe at a later stage we will go for a audi box.

The next step on my beetle is to change the 4th gear ratio to a little taller ratio. Now, everytime it is an absolute mission to loosen the pinion nut and tighten it properly again.... so I made this

This is my first prototype. Will check if it fits... the clearances might be a little tight. The square hole on the side is for a 1/2" ratchet or power bar.

I have seen them being sold by CSP... but 159 eur is a bit expensive. That's why I made my own cheaper plan

I finally got to work on the engine again last night.

As all things go, nothing is allowed to be easy... the CB valve covers does not simply bolt on with the pauter rockers. We had to machine the rocker studs shorter, machine the bolts shorter and drill the valve covers for 10mm.

That done, set valve clearances and modify engine tin to fit with the big beef intake manifolds.

The plan is to run the engine on the engine stand to get one proper heat cycle so the heads can be re-torqued.

Carb or efi... what about both . It surely is easier to run the engine with carbs on the stand than to rig up the efi system

There's still a couple of things to be done, but hopefully we can fire her up this weekend.

Santa dropped this off on Friday. So once the engine is ready it's time for boost pipes and the exhaust header. I always wanted my own tig welder at home.

Be grateful about those covers... the CSP covers dont fit 044 heads and need a real jippo to get the on and sealed.
The joys of custom engines.... and people wonder why they are so expensive to build....

Look, the CB covers are nice. And the C- seal does not leak. But there's always something that needs to be modified. Nothing simply bolts on... but I guess that is why it is a custom built engine

We fired her up last night. Started up first time, no hassles. Oil pressure looks good, but as always there must be an oil leak as well. It kinda looks like the rear main, but at least it's easy to change as the engine is not in the car yet.

So far the engine combo seems to be good. It sounds like a high compression n/a engine... very responsive.

Next step is to take off the rockers again, re-torque the cylinder heads and fix the oil leak. Then its time to build the exhaust header and boost pipes.
