Hey guys, sorry, people (for all I know there might be woman out there reading this forum)
Been away a loooong time. First my adsl connection packed up, no wait, first the pc packed up, then the adsl. All working again now. Work is keeping me very busy - Time spent on buggy: about 2 days a month
Last pics:
Struggling to fit the motor around the rear pipes. F@(KEN S&!T What a pain in the back!!! REALLY!
I must have taken that rear bar out about 6 times to get the dimensions right. First few times I had to jack it up to reach the shock towers and the car is so light I had to attach it to a tree and jack it side ways to reach, then cut the pipes and tack it on again, then take it out, weld, try and fit it - doesn't fit, jack it, cut it, weld it OK you probably get the idea.
Still need to get it right - not a perfect fit yet AND I still need to fit the end-mountings of the motor.
Built the front lights, still need to figure out how to get the rear lights working - got a set of (I think) around 1965 new taillight lenses. (The small ovals with the indicator included.)
Been "swotting" turbo setups trying to get a good combination of cam + turbo + heads
Been trying to source type 4 parts from some local shops. Conversations go like this:
" hello so and so can I help you?
Yes, - I' m looking for a stroker crank for a type 4 vw aircooled motor.
Sure sir, is that a mark 1 or 2?
No, it's the type 4 aircooled 2 liter
Golf sir?
No, aircooled.
But mark what sir?
Mark nothing, TYPE 4!
Sorry sir, no stock
click"
But - no worries - as the aussies say. I'll get there in the end.

AirPower wrote:Here's the motor that I got today - After talking to some people I'm confused - as far as I know where motors are concerned you only get type 4 and type 1. So someone told me this is type 2 (comes out of a kombi) Can you identify it? it's 2liter kombi but as far as I know, still a type 4 engine. Engine number starts with CU and on the net it's identified as type 2 - 1979 to 1983 model. No fuel injection.
Yes Eben we got this one. Skaars soos hoener tande

CU got a new avatar Eben
Yes as wannabee said, but I'm not going to use the casing - main bearings are oversize - 0.50. Don't like the condition of the casing. Still like the [] exhaust ports though - will try to get another Vanagon motor. Therefore - not gonna use the 18H00 heads either () ports. At the moment the casing is just being used as a model to get the mounting points.
Been
lurking around the shoptalk forums

If you are not going to upright cooling the stock system is not going to clear your tubing.

Let me know when you get your stuff, I would be very interested in some Type 4 goodies. Are those Weber 36DCDs in a dual configuration?

Hi Bugger
What are the specs on that cam. Taking into account that the motor might get a turbo later, I was thinking of getting a mild cam ( around 270 duration and lobe separation of around 110 ) to reduce overlap.
When you say you are getting 2 cranks - are they counter weighted?
Do we still have a deal for those manifolds?
Cheers
Mario

Yip the 1st set of manifolds are still here if you want them
no the cranks are not counter wieghted
you should get specs on the tcs20 cam on CB or scat websites I bought my cam over 5years ago and borrowed the spec sheet to someone to never return as usual
My first turbo T4 was built with a Scat C35 cam and it worked pritty well with boost just dont go wilder as that then you just blow the boost straight out of the exhaust valve

OK I'm still here - if anyone thought I went and bought a Golf - the rumors are untrue!
Small update - haven't done a lot due to time being in a short supply. Got the manifolds from Bugger - thanks man
As you can see in the pics - rear lights are on, manufactured the front head lights, gearbox strap is in place and the 2nd bolts are in to secure the roll-bar to the square tubing running underneath the floor-pan. This was done to create a sort of tube frame to keep the buggy from twisting too much.
O Ja - also made the brackets and installed the steering wheel
Cheers for now

C35 - Though it's listed as type 1 cam - I presume the profile can be cut on any camshaft.
Specs: .381 lift on the lobe
285 advertised duration
246 @ .050
Called the "Hill climber" according to SCAT catalog power from 1000 to 5000 rpm.
TCS20 - 294 advertised duration
253 @ .050
.397 lift on the lobe

The C35 has to be orderd specially for t4 but as you are going turbo later then the TCS 20 for street will be better
See that has got more lift as well as the C35
TCS 30 is more for drag I got a tcs 30 in my t4 at the moment
I think the tcs 20 won`t be to bad with some higher compression till the barrels gets spaced out for lower compresion for the Turbo later
