Seems the projects are getting more and more. Well here's mine:
What I've got to start with. (I hope these images will display allraait)
Ol' Faithfull. This motor will be replaced - hopefully - with a type 4, if I can source one. Otherwise a rebuilt 2L although I'm a bit worried about using a standard 1600cc and upsizing it to 2L.
Stripped in 4 days. Awaiting V.Spares to collect and cut floorpan to size.
Anyone want a body for free? - need to get rid of it.
I think what I'll do---- I'll build a motor according to a poll. So tell me what you think is best - type 4 or upsized type 1
All the best and keep the motors revvin'

You won't believe how motivated I am about this project! The idea is to get to under 13 seconds on the 1/4 mile. Bit dangerous if you ask me -- I'm worried it's going to flip because the front is so light but a friend suggested that I fit a heavy spoiler to the front to keep the nose down (only for use when racing).
If it wasn't for the fact that it's so light I wouldn't even have contemplated reaching 14 seconds. 4agedub's motor is a beast! WOW! (Turbo project)
For now the plan for the motor is as follows:
2L type 4 sub assembly (R7000) + custom aircooling. Heads to be flowed. Performance cam and carburated. If that is not enough a turbo will be fitted for sure.
By the way - has anyone ever tried to replace the belt driven air fan with an electric one? If so I'd like to hear from you.
For now the project keeps me busy with all the cleaning and fitting new parts/rubbers/pipes/bearings etc.
Detailed information is hard to come by. I know - I've searched a lot on the internet. I'll share what I've got since some of these pages are relevant to what I'm busy doing at the moment and it might be of interest to members.
As far as I know these are from a 1968 owners manual.
Hi
Yoy will need an electric fan worth about 6 hp to cool the engine as that is what a belt driven fan eats
it will also need to turn at least 3000 rpm
It has been tried but didnt work some drag racers use electric fans just to have some airflow preventing local hot spots.
Building a buggy for drags I wouldnt use the pan at all rather a custom cage cum chassis

Who cares how it's done in California?

6 hp is doesn't sound a lot, but I'm going to need to get every hp available to the tyres to reach my goal. I've drawn a pic of what I'm thinking of doing. The oil cooler would have to be an after-market and not so big as to restrict air flow completely. The plan with the double fans is to increase air velocity and volume and the shroud will be fabricated.
Is this nuggy only 4 the track or street use as well
You dont want spoilers up front you want a wing for handling at the back
i raced once without my buggys back wing and it was all over the road 1/4 mile
the wind/air passes the front wheels and goes under the floor pan there and that actually lifts the back of a Beetle/Buggy up and that is where $hit handling comes from top end
To do 13sec 1/4 N/a you are going to spend a lot of money I would say build it Turbo from the beginning and you know you will do 13`s
Adapterplates Available for Rotary in Beetle and others aswell
And Special Boxes built for Rotary Conversions and Scubies

Thanks for the reply. The whole electric fan concept came about because so far I've only been able to source a type 4 sub-assembly. No plates/fans etc.
If I could get a hold of a complete motor, the electric fan idea is out the window. For 2 months now I've contacted scrapyards/enjin suppliers and even pulled some strings in the black market all to no avail.
I know it's not a brilliant idea - it's a desperate idea.
About the spoiler - I know what you mean - ran the old beetle's clock full a few times, but I think the idea with the spoiler is to prevent air going under the car to create down-force (less air density under the car)
The budget for the motor is around R25000.00
May I humbly ask those that know:
1) Were you in top gear with the beetle gearbox at the 1/4 mile mark?
2) How does top speed impact on 1/4 mile times. What I mean is if my buggy has a low top-end but a very fast pull-away will I be able to reach the same times as someone with a higher top-end, but a slower pull-away?
I appreciate the time you guys are taking to answer all my question.
I have a set of shortend handbrake cabels and a shortend selector shaft availeble if you are interested, all I want for it is a new seleftor shaft front bush.

Ps. I also did send this message to Natbro
have nothing on the cards now, but have a red beach buggy in sight that I want
