quick update on the work done so far during this leave period...

First thing I did when I got back was sort out the oil pressure problem I have had. Turns out the oil pressure relief valve was sticking slightly. After removing 0.1mm form the circumference, it now slides nicely and freely. I have taken the car for a few drives since doing this and no more oil pressure warning lights showing (and yes, it does work).

Changed (again) the shaft seal on the left rear axle and the wheel bearing. 3rd time lucky. First seal was crappy, second seal folded over itself when I put it on. Now made sure its all good and this time it seems to be holding.

I ordered a new carb linkage kit from CB to match their intakes.... fancy bloody thing is too wide for the engine. So the easy option is to shorten it. But then if I ever build a wider engine it wont fit. So I poached a few bits from my previous likages and put it all together. Cut the body descreetly to make things clear and modified the accelerator pedal. Now it all works, but I am not 100% happy with this. Am working on it tho, maybe will have a solution by the end of this week.

Removed and sold the tyres that were on the 17" mags when I got them. I am now running 215/45/17 rubber on the bug. Looks insane. Clearance is a bit of an issue - I had to raise the front of the bug 35mm. I still hit one of the fenders from time to time, but I suspect dropping my tire pressure from 2.4bar to 1.9 or 1.5 might solve those issues - or another 2mm raise.

Without trying to jinx anything, the car is now driving in a way that I am no longer worrying about the engine, its now fun time.

Currently my biggest things I need to tackle are:

Carb linkage needs refining so I can get full throttle with a little less pedal travel than I have at the moment.

I still dont get enough fuel to the carbs through the stock fuel line. If I drive thru 1st gear hard, then more often than not, the carbs pop while in the higher rpm area of 2nd gear. I am starting to work on ideas and methods for plumbing in another fuel line to feed the cabs.

I have new seats too, but these will get fitted when I have time and the other things are running properly.

Re: My bug - ANGRRR - the ongoing project (new name)

Post by Tony Z »

And just got a phone call.....

My new name and private plates are underway. All approved.

The name Suicyde has served me well, but the car is now starting to take on another personality from what it was for the first 13 years that I owned her.
The name Suicyde originally started with a sticker that I saw way back when I was still in school. On the back of a car, there were two stickers, "Drivers Side" and "Suicide". I didnt want to jinx the car too much, so added the "y" to make the name "Suicyde" and the idea was always to get small subtle stickers made to mount onto the outside mirrors, saying driverside and Suicyde in the hope that someone might see it oneday and smile - was supposed to be one of those subtle mods that might be noticed, kinda like the mods to my fanhousing.

After getting the 2332 engine going, all I ever thought is that the car sounds angry. Then I put on the new mags which as I took a side view of the car, I thought that it now also looks angry. Then 2 days later, Thumper comments to me that the car (which was parked outside his office) looks angry and spent the day growling at people as they passed by. I have also had 2 other people tell me how angry the car looks...
And not to mention the fact that the name ANGRRR actually has a double meaning to me
1) As described above, plus the RRR part is the growling, but this alone wouldnt have pushed me far enough to get private plates.....
2) The name is actually a combination of my first name and surname. Not many people will pick this up. Those who know me well enough will see it.

And how you adjust the hight so quickly/easily?

I actually think the car looks quite cute... A pink teddybear hanging off the rear view mirror would not be out of place, especially if a hangman's noose is used,

Well, over the past 2 weeks, as time and weather have co-operated, I have been plumbing in a new fuel line from the tank to the pump, then to the carbs.
My biggest issue as always has been space. Which means that I cant leave the car outside when I am not working on it and I also cant work on it in the garage cause of lack of space... So it involves wheeling the car outside, jacking it up, removing wheels, working on car, and then re-assembling everything and pushing it back inside before I can leave.

I was originally advised to run a 6mm ID fuel line. But thinking that I am going to all this work anyway, I should just as well run a slightly larger line so I have no worries at all.
Keep in mind that the stock fuel line works out to roughly 4.5mmID. Mine now sits as follows:
From the fuel tank to the filters - 12mm
both filters - 8mm
from filters to pump - 10mm
from pump to pressure regulator - 10mm
from regulator to each carb - 6mm

Its a slight overkill, but its in, its done, its neat and it works...
If I wasnt posting this, I could have been test driving it, but alas. Gotta head out shortly for the rest of the day, so the test drive will have to wait until either tomorrow or next week.

a few pics

Fuel lines after being made up according to a sample I made. Note, I had to make it in 2 parts to allow the stock jacking point to still be used while not damaging the pipe.

Rear half moving from under the heater channel to near the gearbox - you can also see my nice little oil cooler ;-)

Running from front to rear under the heater channel

Fuel tank - note the original fittings still in place allowing for me to use the stock fuel line as a FI return line oneday.

Fuel tank fittings with shut-off valve

Fuel filters and T pieces - note the shut off valve allowing for hassle free filter changing.

Nice work! :hangloose:

I like the way you have routed the fuel lines.....major pain in the ass to run new lines through the tunnel so your solution makes sense...
