My other half's '72 1300 bug

Post by Retro Custom »

Thought you guys might like to see my other half's 1972 1300 bug which I built for her.

The colour is the original colour - L53b Gentian Blue. People always ask if its a Porsche colour! Its a one year only colour from 1972.

The car was stripped down and every nut and bolt was cleaned, zinc coated and reused in exactly the same location Same goes with 90% of the parts which were cleaned and reconditioned back to OG spec. It had a little bit of welding which was all done seamlessly to original specification so you can't see its ever been welded. The car was debuted at Volksworld Show which is Europe's top VW indoor show where all the best rides are selected to debut each year.

I'm gonna put the full build up pictures on my website once I've been through the 4,000 pictures of the build!

The car is all original specification apart from the fuel tank which is now gloss black instead of matt black, and the suspension is lowered one inner spline at the rear and a 5 inch custom narrowed beam with shock towers which I built. The wheels are fully polished original Porshce 2 litre Fuchs. Only new old stock and original equipment parts have been used in the build. No Taiwanese shit on there! Front wings were reproductions when we bought the car, so were changed for genuine VW new old stock ones. Bumpers are original VW and were rechromed. The list goes on!
The interior is all original, except the carpets which are original spec Perlon and identical to the original carpets which were there. The engine is original and has been cleaned and reconditioned and all tinware powdercoated to original specification. All running gear is fully detailed and the floorpan is gloss black inside and outside. The paint on the inner arches and above the gearbox is as good as the paint on the roof!

Hi 2BugMe,

Thanks! getting selected for the Volksworld Show is a great accolade, the opportunity to display your car amongst some of the best cars in Europe is humbling! I'm lucky to have had at least one car on on display at Volksworld show every year for the past 4 years. I'm currently building 2 customes' cars for display there next year and will also be displaying another car of my own I'm building this winter - this bug will also be on display there again next year if anyone is planning on visiting and wants to see it.

The standard of cars which the UK guys, especially us Restowagenuk.com guys build is kind of like a competition - everyone tries to outdo one another and the bar of the quality of the cars built gets raised higher and higher. Its now at the point where spot welds are being measured and replacement panels are being spot welded in the exact same place the original spot welds were when it left the factory! Extreme, it may be for many people on here, but that's what we have to contend with over here!

As I built this car myself, and my other half worked on it too, cleaning and detailing parts, it cost a lot less than it would have cost for a VW specialist to build. The only work contracted out was the paint which was done by a friend of mine for around £2,000 (R30,500). Everything was done by me and I run a VW garage myself ( http://www.retrocustom.com ) so the whole car cost, in total, including the purchase of the car came to about £8,000 (R122,180). However if a customer came to me and asked me to build this car, the cost would be around £25,000 (R381,890)

I dug our a few pics of the build up to give you an idea - there's so many pics to go through, I'll post a link to the full build up so you can see in full what was done to the car.

This is the car that we started with..

Image

While the car was solid, there were some sections which weren't..

Image

All repairs were seamless and invisible. You can't tell that its been welded at all.

Take the washer bottle shelf for example - it was rusted all the way through..

Image

So the spot welds were drilled out and a section was cut from a donor panel and seamlessly grafted in and the panel was spot welded back in exactly the same place complete with factory spot weld dimples.

Image

Floor pan was a bit worse for wear so was stripped to bare metal - only hole found was on the framehead which was also seamlessly repaired.

Image

Image

Image

repair done..

Image

All original KAMAX nuts and bolts were acid dipped and zinc plated. You can't buy KAMAX bolts anymore and using new bolts just wouldn't be original!

Image

Original NOS VW front wings were sourced - one was found in sweden and the other was found in a swapmeet at a VW show.

Image

Chassis was stripped and coated in high gloss black

Image

Then built up using all the detailed reconditioned original parts, buts and bolts. Note the front beam is the original one after blasting. The bodyshell was in the paint shop being painted so the 5 inch narrowed beam can't be built until the body is back on to allow for the custom shock towers to be made with enough clearance from the body.

Image

Rear end before..

Image

After..

Image

Under bonnet area after shell was back from paint.

Image

Placed on floorpan and buildup started.

Image

Buildup continues - front axle stripped while I built the 5 inch beam..

Image

5 inch narrowed front beam..

Image

above gearbox..

I'll post up more later!

That is a beautifull car!

BUT

Whilst I understand the reasons for going to the lengths of spotwelding in the same place and other authentic practices, which are to be admired

AND

Do understand why narrowed beams are needed or desired on some cars, on that bug, it does just not go with the standard motor and the peashooters

And it makes the bug look just plain CRIPPLE

There is a big difference , yet also a fine dividing line between custom and crustom---

------ Wonder if it still has drums on the front -------
