68 Import wareabouts???

Post by 2BugMe »

Hi all the guys out there...

Here are a few pics of my 1st beetle i owned in early 90's. But i would like to know if anyone knows were and if this VW still exits??

I bought the car from a mr.Steve Spicer late in 1990 if my memory serves me rite.. Payed R7500 for it. :? It was a rare ( well so he said, and what did i know) 68 imported beetle with the following specs:

German Import
Recon 1600
13600km
New clutch assemble
Disk Breaks front
Honda Prelude seni leather front seats with inertia seatbelts ( all grey)
Centre console
Colour coded Fan shroud and detailed engine parts - chrome etc

A letter was written to Werner Alker and Jacarande Beetle club and that is how i got news of this car. Long story short, i bought it with Student Loan money  and shortly after crashed it on the way to Nelspruit after falling asleep in those amazing Honda seats...

And after the panerbeating work was done:

I put 8 Spoke Empi wheels from Smith Wheels
and had a custom motor built by some guy called Frans that was sopposed to know what he was doing - long duration cam, ballanced and ported
36DCD Carb with manifold
4-in-1 Cowley Exhaust put on and had
dropped suspention - front and rear...

Man, how the BM's and Uno Turbo gasped with surprise if they couldnt shake my ass off the line... :hangloose:  :finger4u:

Anyway, i found a medical repping job that required alot of mileage; and as it would be, the motor was not built properly and was costing me alot of money ( which i didnt have) and time to maintain. After haulling ass past the Shell garage uphill towards Midrand on the N1 Nr 3 resigned from any future and current performance and said good bye in a huge puff of oily smoke. Thus spending another few Grand i had a recon 1600 motor put in.

I was susequently and sadly forced to trade it in for a Opel Astra 160iE in 1995.

And this is what it looked like when i fixed it up and when i sold it..

I cant remember what the registration was when i sold the car; however i can remember this:

Car was raised up again to some rediculous hight
Some lady from Krugersdorp apparently bought it for the same amount as i did
She had already had a smash after the 1st few months on the right front fender
Original registration: ND 151517

Does anybody know where this car might be???????
:zhelp: :zhelp:

Lo Bees,

They r original Honda Pelude semi leather seats - think it '92-96 model..??

I have another set for my pro-ject 74 custome beetle that God-will will start sometime this year.. and they fir perfectly on the standard rails.. so you have plenty of adjustment posibilities...

Found my set at a scrap yard in Durban after a few months of looking around..
