Is it normal that..

The space between the bonnet and front is tight at the front window and then goes bigger towards the fenders and then again smaller towards the front?

I can put a finger between the bonnet and front at the fenders, and a piece of paper between the bottom of the bonnet and the top at the front window point.

I was thinking maybe the bottom where the hood rest on doesn't sit back enough and therefor it closes so weird. Any clues?

I am thinking the car has been in an accident before
Check underneath, check the bodywork around the front suspension for creases

Yes, that's a classic sign of incorrectly repaired front collision damage.
