Wreck Rescue - aka The Notch

Last week, by accident, in the middle of the day, I happened to open my browser and notice an add for a Notchback!
Since I always wanted a notchback, and the price looked good. I jumped at the chance.

So last weekend - 16th of August 2009. We went to fetch the notch.

Arrived at the collection point and all I saw was a long driveway full of cars. Fortunately almost all of them were driveable, so we only had to push one out.

Then as I walked round the corner, is that a familiar shape over there?:

As I got closer, I can clearly remember myself thinking, what the hell are you doing buying another project!

Image

Had to take out some miscellaneous (try spelling that at 2 in the morning :) ) parts lying in the notch, change a wheel, and then push it out up the driveway. The engine was out, so that made the notch easier to manouvre, but the engine was out, so it was a mission to load the engine IN the notch when it was already on the car trailer. I have the bruises to prove it.

But, after said mission:

I took the notch straight to Bugoff:

Note the engine in the background. :hangloose:

After seeing some of the work he did on Herbie, I figured he's the man to help!

Went to fetch some trim and the all important hens teeth, a.k.a. REAR WINDSCREEN  this friday.
All in one piece and looking pretty good.

Image

Bugoff stripped some metal off and inspected the car during the week, and so far we need the sheet metal behind the back seats below the level of the boot floor. The rear bottom quarter in other words, and the usual heater channels.

I went past to take a look and it seems that at some stage in the car's life, someone had put fibreglass over rusted metal. TSK TSK, they should be taken outside and shot. TWICE, just to be sure.

Pan of the car is actually not TOO bad, a rust spot here and there.

Image

Will get the interior and seats in the next day or two.

This means I need, sheetmetal and rust repair.
Various maintenance items (brake hoses, fuel line, disk brakes, engine seal or two)
Suspension rubber.
Tie rod ends.
Window and body rubbers.
Perhaps a Bugger gearbox checkup when the time comes :-)
New carpets.
New headliner.
New upholstery. And I am sure a hundred other small parts I'll only find out about later......

She looks kind of cool on those steelies don't you think ? How about some CHROME STEELIES ?
Speaking of chrome, also took the bumpers in to be rechromed, they were rusted through in a couple of places.

Wish me (and by implication bugoff, calooker, bugger, blitz and whoever has any type 3 spares) luck!

Remember that you have a complete fasty shell at your disposal for any metal that you need
All the best with the project, nice to see another Type 3

Why is the front wheel a small four and the back a wide 5 bolt pattern. Did they fit disc breaks on the front? Nice find thou, would love to have one of these one day.

Judging by the fuel filler flap and front indicators, it's a 69 model...
Are those Renault steelies in front? They do look cool!

Thanks for the encouragement guys.
Yes watercool, it has a disk brake conversion in front, well spotted.
Will either have to get adapters or do a disk brake conversion at the rear as well.

Blitz, yes those are renault steelies. Once I have decided what to do with the rear end, I might just give the steelies a try, until we can locate some fuchs/BRM's/sprintstars or similar. :-)

Episode 2 coming soon....

USELESS TRIVIA no: 1313123
The VIN number indicates that this car was produced Dec 1968.
This means my 58 Beetle was produced in my birth month, and The Notch, ten years later, in my wife's birth month. How is that for a cool coincidence :D

Well, then it would be similar to VW's old production runs, produced in August 09 for the 2010 model year :-).

Quick Update.
Sourced some Type 3 sheetmetal from Blitz :hangloose: Thank you. So work on the rust will be starting shortly!
Also ordered some of the oily bits required, so there are no delays once the repair and paint is done.
Will finally be collecting the seats and interior trim from Vuyo tomorrow. ( I have been away, and then busy at work to make up for the few days away - pretty sure you all know how that goes!)

Expect episode 2 soon!
