Hi There guys
Anyone know if it is possible to change the engine seal on a type1 without removing the engine? If anyone has done this how?
Thanks

It's not difficult. The hardest bit is removing the rock-hard remains of the old seal from the channel. Once that's done it's quite easy to insert the new seal with the bottom lip in the channel. Once the bottom lip is seated in the channel all around then it's a simple process of pushing the top lip into the channel with an appropriate tool.

It can be done, remove the rear breast plate it helps and remove the rubber that is there at the moment it will have to come out in pieces more than likely. If the mounting channel is buckled and bent try to get them as straight as possible, spray plenty Q20 or similar into the channel before fitting the rubber do the same to the mounting edges of the rubber make sure you fit it the right way up or you will be doing it again, a flat screw driver helps guide the rubber, be careful, it is easy to damage the rubber, you will be swearing plenty and your knuckles will take a pounding around the inlet manifolds, you can also remove the manifolds to get more space, it is a shit load easier if you take the motor out.
