Kienzle (VDO) tachograph...

Post by Muderick »

Hi Volks!

Here is one for the history buffs...

This Kienzle tachograph is either for sale or to swap for WHY..?

A tachograph is a device that combines the functions of a clock and a speedometer. Fitted to a motor vehicle, a tachograph records the vehicle's speed and whether it is moving or stationary. The mechanical tachograph writes on a round piece of paper which constantly turns throughout the work day. The marker moves further from the center the faster the vehicle is moving. An entire rotation encompasses 24 hours. Analogue tachographs record the driver’s periods of duty on a waxed paper disc. However, these are vulnerable to tampering, and so are being replaced by digital tachographs which record data on smart cards

Let me know if you are interested in it to fit to either a stationary or industrial or aeroplane engine, or just to hook it up and use the analogue clock function in your garage as a conversation piece.

Muds

Have added some pics of the Tachograph before clean up, the tachograph open (it uses a key to lock) and the tachograph as it woul;d look after I clean it up for you at a nominal extra cost....

The last pic is an omage of what the wax paper disc looks like where all the engines info is recorded on.

...They were fitted either to trucks or even VW busses, or VW powered aircrafts.... They measured the speed as well as time and hours the engine did, as well as having an analogue to show the driver/operator the time... its really nifty! Drivers were required to only clock a certain amount of hours behind the wheel, and effectively could be seen as a little black box to capture all vital data for the truck owner, operator...

here are a few pics of a tacho fitted to a VW bus...

Thanks for the PM's

Muds

While traveling thru Brazil a few years back we used a "taxi" mercedes sprinter to drive us from Sao Paulo to Rio and no matter what bribes we offered, the driver wasnt willing to exceed a 100kph we then got pulled over by the Brazilian "metro" and he had to show them his Tachograph for the trip....turns out they do this randomly and fine/lockup when you brake the speed limit ,if for some weird and wonderfull reason your tachograph doesnt work or has not been reset for the trip you get fined and loose you vechicle to the state !! Now think how many taxi's goverment would own if that was the case here lol !
Sorry for the highjack.
My biggest fear is that my wife sells my cars for what i told her they cost !!

Hijack number 2
Isn't it amazing how they can in Brazil... a country I reckoned was more backwards than SA, can legislate so that taxis need tachos..... while in South Africa they aren't even required to have steering wheels.....
