Aircooled VW South Africa

I found another industrial engine this morning!
It's a Type 126 (single port 1584 cc, 39 ps @ 3000 rpm) with a Getrag Type B gearbox attached to it, NEVER been started , I think from 1979 and probably ex army, nicely fitted on a wooden pallet. Does anybody know what it could have been used for?

Interesting that this thread pops up. I have a dilema on my hands at the moment. I have 6 industrial engines here, all of them single port. The engine numbers doesnt bring up anything on the internet(not even TheSamba.com) so it's useless to me.....

So, where the hell do I get info from as to what is INSIDE these things? (stroke and pistons?) I have read that they cam with different camshafts for different operations.... But that info is as usefull to me than the lenght of a piece of string......

If I am not mistaken, the Army used the industrial engine to generate power for the Oerlikon anti-aircraft gun?

There's a tag hanging from the accelerator shaftie thing that reads
"BRUIKBARE ITEM / SERVICEABLE ITEM" and it was to be used in the airforce, as it is tag # SALM 1A / SAAF 1A. The rest of the info on the tag is unreadable.
We got it started just now, and it runs perfectly!

Hi the Oerlikon power plants I saw was Porsche 4 cylinder engines complete with single carbs and 1700 cc (quite prized as bigbore kits for 1600 356 Porsches) those cams were profiled for low speed running reportedly ideal for a buggy Pine.
After my 40 days we were tasked with carrying the spares into the store at wonderboom military base I coulsd have cried .. casings cranks carbs heads etc by the heap... wonder where they are today

Pine, I found out why you asked for gauges. There are one or two on YouTube, and I see they have some sort of "bonnet" , fuel tank and a control panel with rev counter, ignition switch and other stuff. Mine is probably a stripped down version for the airforce so they can do their own installations/modifications.
