Beetle Popouts

Post by jmvv »

I managed to pick up a pair of popout rear windows for Petrus from a Beetle Graveyard the other day.

All the hardware were intact, but the rubbers were shot and the brightware looked a bit "rof en dof".

This afternoon, I started on one window to replace the rubber and try and spruce it up generally before installing it.

The rubbers were so hard that I ended up cutting them and pulling the remnants from the channel

With the rubber removed, I decided to try an polish the aluminium frame. Elbow grease ended up being too tedious, so the trusty Dremel with buffing wheel stepped up to the plate.

Image

The window clip showed the most improvement (It gets MOER hot under the buffing wheel; so be careful)

After

All the previous overspray as well as quite a few years' worth of gunk was removed.

The window is now refurbished and waiting for installation (Thanks Callooker for supplying the rubber. It was well worth the wait)

One done, one to go and then its time to install them

The glass was fairly badly scratched, and as a last resort I polished the glass using the Autglym metal polish and the Dremel. Only the very deep scratches remained, but they are no longer so obvious.

Great work bud. few qz, 1.is the rubber the same as the original windows? 2.how hard is it to put in pop outs? 3. what needs to be done to convert to pop outs? 4.do you have any leads for the hardware to convert pop outs?

The original rubber was profiled to curve slightly out.

The new rubber is a universal fit, but the fit in the channel is very good ( better than the universal stuff from Pro-Auto Rubber)

As far as fitting it; I am in uncharted waters, but I'll sort it out. Will keep you posted though.

If you need popouts, I can visit the boneyard and see if I can find you a pair.

The popouts fit all years from 68 to 79. The screw holes are already drilled so they are easy to fit!
If anyone has a set of popouts for a pre67 let me know (seriously scarse in this country!!!)

I would also like the name of the metal polish and also have you got a picture of the dremel polishing attachment? I want to remove from spots from the bumpers and headlights and what you have done is amazing....

Pre 67 popout are rare everywhere and in the UK are selling for over £400 for the pair

I decided to leave the fixed ones

i must consider myself very lucky. i took the first set i found and fitted it to my 66. very easy to fit as 69 bug said the three holes for the "handles" are pre drilled on most beetles. the hinge is a bit tricky, but u dont hav to be a brain surgeon to figure it out, even i got it right :D. ill hav a look, i might still hav a set but definetly not the hinges :(

@ HR & Dutch...the polish is AutoGlym and most mag stores sell these, luckily for Dutch who is in the UK will get this polish very easy as AutoGlym is a British company iirc. You can also use another one called AutoSol which is very good but depends on you. Wenol is much cheaper and works just as well.

I can maybe get pre 67 pop outs but costing over 2K....if you guys interested let me know. I might be going overseas soon and will maybe squeeze 2 sets in the luggage...

They deliver on site and the Autoglym product is really excellent. I have been using it for about 20 years now
