Subaru conversion

So, earlier this evening took a Subaru Impreza WRX STI for a test drive and was very impressed at the way it sounds and pulls. Just out of curiousity, how much does it cost to do a swap like that into a Beetle or Type 3? Type 3's have a lot of space in the engine compartment, the nicest suby swop I have seen is the Suby Notch..

What mods would the gearbox need to be able to handle the extra power?

I have a hacked fastback with a hole in the front for a rad, and still have all the piping etc, so it could be a future plan .

The buggy shop (think they call themselves Far Side service center now) can do it for around R16k last I asked.. Its a fully hidden conversion for beetles but i'm sure they've got the skill to pull off a notch job

Do they supply everything or is that just the labour...prices i know...ej20t 6000 odd rand +-180kw or the ej18t 4000 odd rand 110kw...management 3000 odd rand and the list goes on that is the basic starting things...then there is adapterplates ect.

I can get EJ20 turbo engines for around R3.5k, but in order to get it at that price, have to buy a minimum of 5

It'd be nice to do this in a Type 3, plenty of space for the motor to fit comfortably, would be a wicked street sleeper

I thought of this before spending all the money on my standard engine. So when I asked about it, thats what they quoted me, full job and 3 weeks in the shop.

If it does cost that ie, i take them a stock beetle with nothing...and 16k later have te full conversion then im going to create myself a subby conversion piggy bank right away...72 you dead sure?you dont supply anything just take your car to them and 16k?

you guys are only looking at 1 side of the story....

brakes.... WTF do you think a set of drum brakes is going to think to a 300hp car?
Gearbox. Lets say a recon box is R5000. Thats R5000 every time you decide to dice that Porsche Boxter next to you at the traffic light. Not to mention towing costs....
Decent tires to handle the power and the higher cornering speeds...

Great conversion price.... R15000 straight into the grave.




Seriously though.... all the works required to do it safely and reliably and you prob talking closer to 30 or 40K total, if not more.

Dubster, Tony Z is right in saying there other factors involved in building a reliable toy, but the full engine conversion with 'hidden' plumbing for the cooler and hidden radiator, fully working costs R16k. To be fair, that was the quote 8 months ago but i'm sure not much has changed. Speak to Marius at the buggy shop..

Tony i get what your saying and i was just wanting to know if thats to get the motor running...if i did it id upgrade brakes and put in some sort of a roll cage...16k is still cheap if they supply the motor, radiator, fuel management, piping, ect. Like i said the normal price of the motor and management alone is starting to get close to their price...but ja you are someone else might scheme hey for 16k i will have a m3 killer without anything else....And they would be so wrong.....
