What do you guys think of this??
I can get this 1986 VW Polo Classic
I need a small daily runner. Would this be worth buying??
I have driven it, it is sloooooow, but seems to be quite solid still. My only concern is that engine, not sure if parts are available for it locally...
Not sure if it has a 1000cc or 1300cc engine.
It does need a bit of bodywork, but that isn't serious. Full licensed and has all paperwork...

Re: What do you guys think of this??
That really is a Polo "Classic"
If it runs ok, is reasonably reliable, has all paperwork (as mentioned), and the price is right (important!), then why not?

Re: What do you guys think of this??
Yups this is a MK2 Polo. Have only seen a few others in this country, they are very popular in the UK though...
I'm guessing that a 1000/1300 is going to be a lot less heavier on fuel than a Beetle or 1700 Type 3

Re: What do you guys think of this??
That engine layout looks quite similar to the later polo's. I am no mechanic, but I bet quite a few parts will be interchangeable with newer polo's and golf 3's....
Would be interesting to find out, thats possibly your biggest potential risk: parts and service items availability!

From wiki: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Polo )
Polo Mark I (Typ 86, 1975–1979)Main article: Volkswagen Polo Mk1
Volkswagen Polo Mark I
Also called Volkswagen Derby
Production 1975–1979 (Mark I)
1979–81 (Mark IF)
Body style 3-door hatchback
2-door saloon
Platform Volkswagen Group A01
Related Audi 50
Volkswagen Derby
The first-generation Polo, a rebadged version of the Audi 50, was introduced in 1975 and was produced until October 1981.[1][4] By 1979, 500,000 Polos were produced worldwide.[1] It shared the internal designation Typ 86 with the Audi 50.
The differences between the Audi and Volkswagen models were minor, with the Polo being cheaper and much more basic

This is a Polo MK2.
Not taking the car after taking it for a longer drive today. Needs too much of work to justify buying it.

Thats nice, looks a lot like a car a friend of mine had, it was a Voyage 1600 from Brazil in LHD. Mind if I ask how much it was going for since youre not buying it?

Re: What do you guys think of this??
They wanted R12000-00 for it...
- Has a bearing knock or something that sounds like it.
- Brakes need to be done as the pedal hits the floor then it barely brakes.
- Overheats once you do more than 10 KMs on a trip - elctrical fan is not cutting in.
- Cuts out when you brake hard, some kind of electrical or carb problem which the original owner could never fix.
- Has a bad tapping/knocking noise from the tappet cover.
- Has a cracked windscreen.
- Left front fender has a ding in it, was previously repaired with loads of filler.
- Boot and rear screen is leaking.
- Front seats need to be re-upholstered.
- Clutch is a bit suspect-
- Gears are very floppy and loose, reverse detent not working so it's easy to hit reverse while driving (Needs the linkage bushings to be changed)
- Cvs are shot including boots.
-It's slower than a Citigolf 1300
So yeah, it needs a fair amount of work, would be an awesome project car due to its uniqueness...
