why not just run a temp rev counter, write down the speeds and rpm somewhere and then remove the counter again.
If you have the same tyre diameter as Angrrr then you'll find yourself cruising at 130km/h with that box, around 4000rpm.

Good idea Tony, was under the impression the old box was an "SFAS" but when i got it out today, found it was just a "########SF"

Not sure of the ratios of the old "SF" box, but always thought it to be the same ratio as the SFAS

Experts to correct me.

Looking forward to a good cruising speed as the type 4 has the power to push.

OK so box out, took a little time to find the gear shaft opening to disconnect the hockey stick,.....

IF you have a Type 3, then you will find a small cover UNDER the pan with 3 tiny screws.

Need to get a few 7mm bolts for the Hockey stick cover as the old box had studs (no need to destroy old box as it was perfect).

Will be fitting a new clutch plate as well as the engine is out at this time.

Note to self;-"Do not forget the 2 sets of axle seals to refit side shafts."

My next job will be to strip the front of the Fastback, so I can get the gear lever shaft new bush in.

May land up chipping the paint on the front apron. Will have to give myself a extremely firm talking to if it does.........

Till later

Thanks for looking

Herman

Thanks for that Tony

kids came for a visit on Monday so no work done.

But tonight i got the gear shaft out, cleaned it and fitted the tunnel bush, re-fitted the shaft back.

Working in the small hole at the hockey stick side was a killer,Big hands small hole bad eyes, short temper... man was it painful.

Will post photo of this magic little dark hole of type 3

Fitted the hockey stick end box from old box onto the new, and made sure that the seal was good.

Need a clutch cable bowden tube holder bracket, as the new box has the bolt on type which did not come with the box.

Till next update....

As promist here is the photo of this tiny hole that these big ham fingers had to work in.

Well with blood sweat and swear words, I did get it done.

Here some more of the Fastback in for its pits stop.

Got the gear lever in and closed all the inspection covers, cleaned the side shafts ready for installation, and refitted the spare wheel well, with seal.

Oh , and fitted the new clutch plate and pressure plate.

So till next look

Herman looks like you are treating the old girl to a special treat there. What colour do you call that paint you used on the gearbox and engine or is it a home mix. Good luck with the rebuild.

Thanks Terry,

No, the engine is a Villiersdorp-ean and that is the colour Arno does his engines, so the box is just a copy to match,

She Is getting an SFAS box just to treat her, and she looks a lot better & sexier with LONG legs..........

You can see thats she's my well rounded, Long legged plaything in red.

Put a couple of hours in tonight,

Cleared the bell housing for the 2lt type 4 flywheel and pressure plate.

Made sure to tape the spigot shaft, and started grinding.

Just about done, when I nipped the spigot shaft, and the few sparks set my "T" shirt alight.

This instant heat from the Magnesium powder was super scary.

Turfted the angel grinder aside, luckily missing the Fastback, and me trying to get this very colourful flamed shirt off.

Managed to walk away with a burn on the arm, thank goodness I still have good reflexes.

With all this commotion, got the gearbox in on its mountings, and fitted the gear lever rod with all its new bushes and parts.

Nice not to have to stir PAP whiles driving, and the lever is near by, do not have to go get it under the dash where she used to hide.

So off to bed, and will try to get it all done in the morrow, family have other plans for Sunday.

Till then

Herman

Nice work. Do you have CCTV footage of your burning shirt by any chance? I'm sure it'd be worth a watch ;-)

Talking about the spigot shaft... Which way did you go to compensate for different position of the needle bearing inside the type 4 crank/flywheel. Did you use the longer spigot shaft from a type 4 engined baywindow or is the needle bearing more outwards from the crank to reach the shorter type 1- spigot shaft?

Hi Dawie,
Had the 2lt in before, so had moved the needle bearing up more outward.

Still hopping she will be OK but, the best would be to have it changed in the future, need to get a spigot shaft in stock.

Sounds like a plan,

But would you be terribly offended if I put the fire out myself whilst waiting for the Split fire truck to get from Klapmuts to J-Bay.??

The swear jar was considerably increased in size instantaneously at that point, we still shoveling in the coins that missed the opening.

@ Dawie,
My biggest fear is that the needle bearing gets pushed back when I fit the motor which will not help things one bit.

Not sure but I think the worst that can happen is that she starts leaking oil from the spigot shaft seals,

Your input Please.
