Hi All

This will be my challenge for the next few months - and my first . I'm still unsure about the model as there is no visible manufacturing plates. Watch this space for progress and updates ...hopefully :)

Congrats Deon, nice buy! I have a real soft spot for early bays. At a guess I would place this one at between 1967 and 1971. Perhaps the mighty Fig can elaborate...

So far so good ....

I have :
1. Replaced all the bearings
2. Replaced brakes and skimmed disks
3. Removed enjin , stripped , cleaned and serviced - hours and hours of painfull cleaning
4. Replaced clutch
5. Drained gearbox oil and filled
6. Replaced enjin , set timing and idling - running like a dream
7. Removed all interior panels and fittings and is about 80% done sanding everything down.
8. Sandblasted and epoxied the rims and bumpers

Next :
1. Inspect wiring - when replacing the engin I saw some of the wiring towards the back looks a bit "patched" - Are these kombi 's quit easy to rewire? Do you get a replacement wiring harness or loom ?
2. Replace accelerator cable - not happy with the current one - rather fix it now. Still not sure on the model yet - I see the cables differ in lentgh?
3. Stone chip pan , spray interior and engine compartment -

Any good references in the Helderberg area for affordable spraypainters and good autoelectricians if required?

Hi Deon, congrats with your bus and good luck with the project, why don't you post your VIN then we can work out the model, my guess - 1970 8)

So it's been a while.....
Since the last post quit a bit has happened . I had to have the engine overhauled - not cheap anymore ! While is was at Grand Slam , I had them fix up the steering , sort out the gear lever coupling , redo the break lines , Stone chip the chassis and a few more odd and ends.
SInce then I have the fixed up the wiring on the indicator assembly - still looking for a replacement unit as this one doesn't want to "stay in place" when turning. Does anyone know if the generic ones you get are any good?
Today I took off all the doors - sliding door was a bit tricky ! , Removed the mirrors for a pollish , Removed the headlights for a polish , Took out the instrument panel to fix up or replace with a good second hand unit if anyone has a working one.
Next: Prep the cabin and doors for a spray paint , Replace the accelarator pedal ( Still looking for a decent one) , Replace the steering wheel ( Still looking for a decent one) , Start making the wooden panels / lining.
I will load some pictures in the next few days.

Have you tried Shelleys for any of the above items that you need? They break up Kombis quite often. What exactly is wrong with the instrument panel? You mentioned the fuel guage did'nt work, what else ? You can also try Henry at Berg Motors, also Andreno in Villiersdorp ...

Sounds like nice progress has been made with your bus at Grandslam - at least you know the job has been done right

Speedo needle is broken . Now that I have it out I see that the fuel gauge needle is there but it wasn't working . The clock also wasn't working . Might just be a wiring issue or maybe the fuel sender is faulty - would hate to remove the engine again (last resort) ! I will try Shelleys and a few other for the parts this week.

Could you post a pic of the clock, is it a VDO clock. Is that bus a Delux? Hopefully it is a wiring issue, those clocks are'nt very common.

There is a way to test the fuel guage to see if it is working or not, one of the electronic buffs will have to help out here, I think you have to short it to earth, the needle will move to "full" and back. Is the speedo needle repairable ?
I can come in to Stellenbosch in the week some time, I have some speedo bits and bobs, but Strand is too far .....
Are you available during the week ?
No indicator/switch/ stalk spares - sorry

Anyway, hopefully the rest is just a wiring issue.

It's a VDO clock yes...

OK Deon - my cell no. is 082 417 4553, work out which day of the week is best for you, let me know, we can take it from there. At best we can organize a speedo needle, I'm not sure if the fuel guages I have work or not ....

Got a "new" needle for the speedo - does anyone know how to replace the needle without breaking the thing and secondly how to reset the odometer to 00000?

I decided to remove the radiator after I saw the gaping hole in the floor when removing the hardboard "center console" . Will have to weld it up somehow - this bus keeps on giving and giving - challenges that is!
Have it stripped down nicely now - after fixing up a few holes it will be ready for cleaning and spraying the inside.
Can't wait to start with building the interior...

I'm also guessing it's a 70. The VIN will tell us exactly what model and year.

The second digit of the VIN specifies model, and the third digit the year. I'm guessing your VIN starts with 220 (Microbus) or 240 (Deluxe).

It's got disc brakes in the front which makes me think it's a late '71
