Has any body got any hints, tips or ideas as to the easiest removal of a rear wheel bearing on a beetle.

Are there any advantages/disadvantages of using a sealed bearing?

Unsealed bearings allow you to change damaged ones, instead of the entire unit, and some people argue that sealed bearings are not as hard-wearing as seperate bearings...

1. Take the rear wheels off...
2. Ask someone else. ;)

Merlin, the sealed vs unsealed bearings are the same except the sealed ones are packed with grease and, well, sealed. You can't replace the balls piecemeal and you wouldn't want to.

I wouldn't recommend sealed bearings on a Beetle or split bus rear axle as the bearings are designed to be lubricated by the transmission oil.

To remove the rear wheel bearings I made a pair of hooked extensions for my two-arm puller out of two Ford Escort cylinder head studs.

Sealed bearings are the way to go if you have a lowered rear end as the unsealed bearings will not get the required lubrication. Removing the bearing is a pain, I have in the past welded 2 plates to the bearing face onto which the bearing puller has something to bite into.
