midmounting a beetle engine ?

this ones for Bugger
is it hard to midmount a beetle engine like they have on fomula vees
what do you need to do ?
do you still have the all gears?
cooling problems when running in a beetle?
just want to know

Hey,

A clever dude like Bugger simply turns the diff around inside the gearbox to make it work for mid-mount. All the gears still work the same.

You would need to replace the pan with a custom space frame chassis to mid mount the engine. Doable, but a lot of work.

Bugger... I've heard about flipping a g'box over a lot... with audi & alfa boxes too. But could you please explain to me what needs to be done to accomplish this? Are special parts needed or is it just a case of turning the orientation of the existing parts?

When talking flipping a gbox are you talking specific Beetle of the Audiand Alfa
Beetle you can fit the Diff from the opposite side it usually go in and turn the box around Not flipping it to make it midmount
The others you actually have to turn the Box upside down close vent holes and make new vent holes at the "BOTTOM NOW TOP" and new oil drain hole top now bottom

Aah so for a beetle g'box you just turn the diff innards around but for the others you need to flip the box.. thanks... was always wondering about that.

If I may ask, if one does a mid mount (I am thinking Spyder replica) then how does one get the gear rod linked up as engine will be in front of gearbox, or am I just being stupid here?

I was wondering about that a few years ago as well, till I saw this Formula Vee at a Show in Pretoria in 2007 - had a close look at the linkage setup but *duh!*

didn't take a picture of it!

The linkage did however look something like this - a bit more complex than a standard Beetle but I'm sure you'll figure it out -

That really helps. If I have a 5 cylinder Audi engine, (actually looks like it may fit midmount in spyder) then maybe something like this can be done? Maybe it is an crazy idea, but imagine the nice sound on this little kit car.
Would a beetle suspension be safe enough on such a setup? I am not talking a racing car, or a 200 kph car. I am thinking a nice sounding RSK, with a good 0 - 100 just for fun between robots.

You can build a custom gear linkage system to make the gears work mid mount
and make a turnd around beetle suspension setup work with the 5cylinder motor you want to use just with some upgrades
