My 1958 Beetle (so I'm told !!!)

Post by Yugan »

Hi Guys,

These are images of my '58 Beetle. One family owned from new, I'm the second owner :D . She runns okay but needs work. No Rust which is a good thing :D. This project will only start in future (timing unknown) but for now I'm collecting parts etc. I have quite a few trim parts imported from Wolfsburg West already. The re-chroming of the bumpers and sourcing a rear window is still a concern. My intention is to collect all my parts and do a full restore at once ... will definitely replace the engine with a mildly tweaked 1600 Twinport (or should I say that's the plan :D) ... The first pic is of our Basset Cosmo who already knows that this will be his Bug when completed

That's a very cool beetle! Congrats to Cosmo  (he doesn't look terribly happy though  ) Gauging by the cigar front indicators, it's nearer to a '60 than a '58, but it could well have had those fitted later. I can'tsee if it's got semaphores in any of the shots. If it does, then it's more likely to be a '58.

Either way, it's a great looking bug and I really like the colour! Many happy miles :D

Its not a 58,...i would go with 62-64. But I am no beetle expert,so the exact year I couldnt say,....but what I can say is judging by what can be seen in the pics,...its post 59. No semaphores,...cigar shaped indicaters, newer shaped tail lights.

Hi guys,

It does have semaphores ... I think the cigar lights and rear tailights were changed for legal and saftey reasons ???

Cosmo, isn't happy when we catch him doing wrong ... probably walked in on him trying to hotwire the car here

either a '58 or '59

what is the VIN? We can better ID it that way.

With semaphores it's then smack on. As Mince has suggested, post the VIN, then we know for sure!

1960?!
With Semaphores? I hope that the VIN plates were not swopped around. Have you checked on the tunnel under the rear seats?

Strange as it seems ... maybe a late 1959 registered in 1960 ?

Yip, nothing on the tunnel ... I checked, hope I'm not going blind ....

No. VIN number says what year it was made, not registered. Papers indicate year of production and year of registration.
In my case, my beetle says it is a 1957, but it was built in 1956.
Check on the tunnel under seat, just before the cover plate.
Does it have papers?

Yip has all papers, just transferred it on my name ...

Papers say 1960 ... What year would VIN be from, is this really a 1960 VIN or earlier ?

Checked under tunnel at back but couldn't find a number, will check again this afternoon ...
Kind regards,

okay. the number you gave us 2700### actually dates it to October of 1959

All good. Probably registered as a 1960 as a result. Your car is correct. No worries there afterall
