Can you help me understand this:
If this is a Type 1

how do I spot the difference

I'm sure you know - Type 1 = Beetle
- Type 2 = Kombi

BUT: You get Type 2's with different motors.

In the early days Kombi's had Beetle motors, therefore there is no difference in the 2 pictures you posted.
Why do we celebrate the guy that invented the wheel??

You have a Type2b with a Type 1 engine...

as in the picture you posted, when the book or aircooled nuts refer to the type 4 engine this is what they are talking about, hence you have the type 1 engine, but the type2 vehicle.

Mostly the only difference between the two would be the cooling tins on the engine.

You can use the same engine in both with a difference of tins for the cooling.

In a Beetle the tins will make it a type 1 and the same motor in a bus could make it a type 2, although its still a type 1 engine.
