T2 Glass suppliers

Post by Deon_Mostert »

Does one still get new glass for the Bay window side windows? My 1/4 window pillars have rusted through and I was thinking of replacing it with 1 piece solid glass - something I assumed would be a regular thing - but some calls to local glass suppliers seems to indicate that these windows nor the original glass is not available?

Does anyone know of a supplier in Cape Town area?

AFAIK, all the glass on a baywindow except the windscreen is flat, so you can have copies cut from 6mm laminated safety glass. Laminated glass is not best for quarterlights, though, because the exposed edge will allow moisture to start delaminating the glass. I'm sure there are glass places that will make custom toughened glass for you, I just don't know who they are.

All you have to do is have a glass cut to the correct size, use a small grinder with fine paper disk, grind the edge to round the corners, and remove the sharp cutting edges.
Then BOIL IN HIGH concentration of salt, Yes SALT, 1KG of salt to 5 lt of water or even more salt, can never have too much salt, put it in a flat pan with spacers under the glass so the water/salt covers both sides, and boil for 3 hours.

Hey presto, toughened glass.
