These black plastic center consoles were factory fitted to some South African Beetles in the 70's - are they unique to the South African market?
Originally they had a black vinyl sleeve or 'sock' around the gear lever, the rubber in the pics is not original. The 'woodgrain' effect seen in the pics of is typical of the factory interior of 70's SA Beetles
My sister's bug had one fitted. I don't like the originals as they tend to break around the screw holes. The moulding was too thin. I bought a nice fibreglass replica from Werner at KKKNK this year. Much stronger than the original.
Anyway sorry for the hi-jack and I don't know if they were a SA only accessory.
The only substitute for cubic inches are more cubic inches.
I bought one from Werner last weekend as well - they are indeed much more solid than the originals, and you can cut the size of the hole for any size gear lever

Pine can you please post a picture of the one you bought from Werner. I really don't know how to post pics on this forum. Hloni, I will also post some pics on my website sometime next week and if you send me your email, I'll mail you some pics.
Thx Wernher

Here it is below. As you can see, it is virtually the same as the original - even the 'ripple effect' outer texture is accurately replicated. As the console is going into HW2, I only needed to cut the small offset hole for the EMPI T-Shifter
