most expensive Porsche sold

Post by MarshallGTi »

The most expensive Porsche in the world has been sold at auction in the US. The 1973 Porsche 917/30 Can-Am Spyder racing car was part of a record-breaking classic car sale held by the Gooding & Company auction house at Amelia Island, Florida.

The sale set no fewer than 11 world records for the highest auction prices paid for specific Porsche models, with more than $36 million worth of vehicles changing hands in total.

The highlight of the sale was the 1973 Porsche 917/30 Can-Am Spyder, which sold for $4.4 million (around £2.75 million) and is now the most expensive Porsche ever sold at auction. It's powered by a 12-cylinder turbocharged engine capable of producing 1,100hp and hitting 124mph in 5.3s.

The car was part of the Drendel family's collection, which included a series of incredible Porsche racing cars, 17 of which were also up for sale at the Gooding & Company auction.

Wow !! Just awesome 1100 HP 39 years ago - and how many pistons and turbos does a Veyeron have to get a 1000 hp now?

Martin, typo on your site, front page. "You" should be "your". Very nice site btw and a very, very exciting line of work too!

Unfair to really compare the two, the Porsche is an out and out race car and probably got rebuilt from the ground up after every race. The Veyron gets serviced every 5000kms/ 1 year.

The porsche also had a high boost setting..............and I think that it was closer to 1600bhp, but was reigned in to save the engine.

Quite right, the Veyron's boost is only 18 psi while that on the 1100hp Porsche, with two very sizable inline turbos, is just under 40 psi. The Veyron makes 12% more torque and it attains the same top speed while being 1000kg heavier.

If you compare the equivalent "boosted capacity", the Porsche has 50% more cc than the Veyron, so it should produce 50% more power, which it doesn't. The automotive engineers have come far in those 40 years.

Not taking anything away from the Porsche, though. It is very impressive.
