My first Bug ...felt like its bitten

Post by MrHappypants »

So going to pic up my first bug this afternoon ...whoop whoop!! :hangloose:

'76 1600L ...standard as my lawnmower.

Will post pics when i pick it up later!
What does the 'L' stand for after 1600 ...was it a luxury model and if so what were the differences compared to the standard? (im very new to bugs)

That was an indication that the car had luxury trim.

On the outside, L cars came with Rostyle wheels with a bikini trim ring and it had finger guards at the door handles. Standard Beetles had silver painted wheels with hubcaps. The L cars also had a tinted band across the top of the windscreen.

When the indicators were moved into the bumper, L cars got a rubber insert in the recess of the bumper.

On the interior, the car has a padded dash compared to the steel dash in standard Beetles, your car has carpets, compared to rubber floor covering in standard Beetles and some of L cars had front headrests, even with the vinyl upholstery. Like in your car, the dash had wood look trim. The gear knob had the shift position on top, where the standard Beetle had a plain gear knob.

Later models had velour seat upholstery compared to a plane vinyl seat

Awesome bug. Are you planning to keep it original? I think the L stands for some luxury features like the padded dashboard. Seats were padded a bit differently too. But some-one on here will be able to tell you exactly. Enjoy your bug. Treat it with the respect it deserves.

Thanks jmvv!! That is exactly the info i was looking for!! :drunks: ...

as far as keeping the car original...yes!!!
i wanted a baja project but then this little bug came up and i couldnt pass this well looked after beetle up...i had so much fun, took it for a drive out to sardinia bay last night and all around town, drives PERFECTLY! exept i gota relace the fuel pump, its leaking a bit. Can anyone tell me which aftermarket one NOT to get and which one would be good quality? thanks

as it stands in my head at the moment my plan is to put the body on trssels or something similar and find an old beach buggy to put on the pan so i can still use it while i sort the beetle body out.

:drunks:

the baja project will be on hold until i can find a suitable donor car ... badly rusted and not original etc etc
