Seen it all ?? NO

Post by calooker »

Got a T3 motor for parts a few months back, decided to try start it up on Saturday, no go and knoked bad just cranking it over.
Opened it up... this is where the fun begins, 1 & 2 pistons are low compression with a recess on the crown, 85.5, #2 cylinder is oversize 86mm, #4 cylinder & piston is 87mm, #3 is 87mm piston with a sleeve that was probably 87 but was oval and measured almost 88mm across one side and 87.5 across another plenty detonation marks on the crown, head on 1 & 2 cylinder suposed to have 30mm exhaust valves but has 32mm valves cracked BAD, exhaust valve stuck open on #3. Crank ran bearings on #4 at some point all that was done was old replaced with new big end on journal on #4 and was .5mm undersize while all the others .25mm, no flyweel shims only steel spacer at crank, end float was around 2-3mm. Push rods, mix and match from 1200 & 1600, cam lobes badly pitted one lobe only had about 6mm lift, 3 folowers just about ready to fail with a concave shape and about 3mm thick head, 30mm oil pump, where a 21mm should have been used, oil holes barely lined up. Dizzy drive gear had no shims.
Only good thing going for it was the main bearings all to spec ???

Obviously put together with parts that someone had lying around, and probably ran like that. WTF ??? :zhelp:

I always prefer to buy a stripped engine for parts rather than a complete unit at least I can see first hand what I'm paying for. :TIC:
Couldn't expect much from a sub without a flywheel  R500 :bn: the idea was to only use the tin & fans, but even the tin has been butchered, hoping the Genny is still usable.

Three engines I got all come with the famous words of.... "It ran perfectly just before it came out of the car"

One had welded pistons, on the top as well as the small end bush areas
Next had oval pistons that where under size and nerled to fit, creaked heads, different con-rods.
The last one has not been opened, but already :bn: n scared to have a look. sump full of tar?

But on the bright side, the VW engine must be a assume design, to be abused like this and still run....
