Constant Velocity universals Explained ?? sort of

As any of you good people out there have experienced before the above has had me in a real confused state

First attempting to take these things off is a real test of why does this spanner/ tool not work in the little recess provided

after getting them off and cleaning each one individually and not muddling them up as the book says

This is were the literature gets seriously confusing
Some have a groove some have many groves some have no groves some are recessed and some not

Anyhow with all this grooving and recessing I thought I would post a few pics with some of the explinations taken from the "Haynes repair manual "

Here is the single groove oke

Please do correct me if I am wrong
Grooved version the groove faces the flange or outside - this outside being where the circlip goes on

For the recess one
Recess faces the boot

The other parts worth noting is not to tilt the joint more than 30 degrees cause it can fall apart
also there is only one way of putting it back together again
Balls need to clik in and if correctly installed then should be easy movent hense the thing wanting to fall apart when tilted
If the joint is tight then rotate the inner portion
Should have large gap in the outer channels to a small gap in the inner channels

Maybe someone more intelegent than myself can explain why there is a wrong and a correct way as the measurements all seem the same on the inner and outer sides
Is the centrifugal force driving the balls out or in when movement happens

I recently replaced my beetle's CV's, the IRS suspension on my '73 beetle uses 4 CV joints, I found out they are exactly the same as the City Golf inner CV's and bought 4 @ R285-00 from Goldwagen, took me about 4 hours to strip, paint the shafts & install the new units. (after much swearing at the PO damaging 3 of the bolts, me cutting the one off and getting/using the right 12 spline tool for the rest). 8)

I cant comment on the CV. But for the sake of being pedantic and giving out more useless information, that it isnt a 12 spline tool... it actually is a triple square tool

Whatever man, at least you knew what I was refering to.. Herman is right with the XZN description, I checked my workshop manual..
