Le Bay - 1977 Bay

Post by The Gymkhana Fanatic »

- The Gymkhana Fanatic (TGF) has always wanted a Kombi and he got his uncles for R5000. It has rust and a engine rattle. TGF is excited about this as its his first car. He intends on making it an almost rat roadtrip machine with a difference. This is his first car.

I know what you thinking...since I was reading about your comments on how irresponsible 18 year olds are with cars. I don't intend on doing any molesting to this bay and it will only get better. Unfortunately my budget does not allow a full restoration at this point.

When it arrived:

Bit more cleaning and rearranging the spot lights:

The spot light change required a bit of creativity and modding.

When this car with with her P.O it was involved in a hit and run with Genna Blair who is a not so famous actor from the movie "Spud" where she plays the mermaid. I almost feel Iike sending her a message on twitter. I believe Spud 2 is coming out sometime but I'm not into the movie scene so if you do watch it remember that The Mermaid is a Kombi abuser. Apparently she got out, laughed and drove off.

At this stage we (My younger bro and I) are still busy cleaning it. Vinyl leaves a horrendous amount of residue behind and since this paint job isn't so good, it's not an entirely simple task because the paint wants to come off with the use of meths. I will take some more photos once it is clean. I suspect that unlike most project threads there will be a surplus of photos.

The cleaning process is still under way with us tackling the vinyl on the other panels since the last post.

We also started removing the residue from the vinyl. Once it's off it will get a decent clean.

Instead of using thinners try petrol as it wont attack the paint. Vinyl shops use it to remove the glue without stripping the paint...

What I would suggest is that you draw up a project plan and then prioritise the things you NEED to do linked to the budget you have.
If it is in fair running conditions then look at sorting out the rust issues as it will only get worse. So fix the cancer even if you dont have funds for the spray job just prime it, then you can focus on the other things when you have bucks.

if you use a heat gun, vinyl will come off with very little effort and not leave any residue at all
its all in the details....

The more you drink, the cleaner the car looks.......

It dissolves the glue, and removes the residue that stained paint at the edge of sticker
