My gift to me from me Motor tear down by VdubTech

Post by 62vwbeetle »

So yesterday the grey monster took her last drive of 2013 , from edenvale to VdubTech . What a hairy trip up fishers hill nearly took out a learner driver who stopped to turn without indicating. Ass%#*% at least my discs are working and I can drive and managed to control the slide and keep her straight.

The cause of the issue was me speeding actually as have to keep her above 2500 rpm for motor to work. So I was doing 50mph plus and anyone who has been to Buger knows fishers hill can be challenging especially with a car that won't drive unless it's being pushed to max.

Anyway was good to see Pierre and hopefully Johan and him will get to bottom of my dog 1776 build. Here's to a great 2014. And a motor that will cook !

I think not only yours but many others

Thanks again for Giving VdubTECH the Opportunity do work on your Baby

Yip will remove the motor and during strip down will make all the necessary notes eg deck height and head CC etc to work out what current CR is
Then will have the Cam checked to what Duration it is and have a look at the Flow of the heads
Also Will strip down the Dual Carbs check Jets and emulsion tubes with venturis
So should be much better than current So then We will sit down With Brandon and Discuss what will be changed and modified to make this Beetle Derivable
Adapterplates Available for Rotary in Beetle and others aswell
And Special Boxes built for Rotary Conversions and Scubies

Woohoo so after a busy January the VdubTech team should be pulling the grey goats motor out this week . Am so curious to find out what went wrong with the build. So many theories but Johan and Pierre will get to the bottom of it. Keep ya all posted.

Hi all and @bugger welcome back from the campout

So my iPhone died can you believe it -seems rotten to the core ! so lost all my numbers so couldn't call to check in

Progress as of last week - motor is out and in pieces , so would love to know how the grey goat ate its nice Engle cam and New Conrods - must've been the really great guys who built it first -thanks so much - Kenny if you still ran your :bn: business CAT motorsport I would beat u with a stick ! As for the second rebuild - name forgotten - nice of you to check all the components before you put them back together - given that you were briefed on the contents that you should've had "inside" and ran away with your money !!!!!! Seems its true goats eat anything!

After reading about the Grey 73 Custom split tonight am very excited about vdubtechs work! Watched it coming together there

Hope to read update on the forum - will try pop past on Sat am.

Ok So Who ever had a go at your motor had no Idea what the Meaning os CR means
at best you do not want low CR as the engine will not work properly on stripping the motor the first thing I noticed was there was one hell of amount of Deck height or some will call it Bumping clearance on avarage all depending on how much a head is skimmed you do not want less than 1.5mm other wise you start getting all sorts of Squeesh and Detonation Problems
so who ever built this engine twice thought 8.4mm deck height will or should be good for a reliable motor (Yes they are right but going nowhere slowley )
So The guys used 1200 Conrods that are much shorter than 1300/1600
The cam that was in also have some Gibrish marks on it so will not use it as I got no Ide of what it is

Already got a std set of rods reconditioned and balanced to use
First need to clean the casing and all the relevant parts so we can assemble the Short block as I need to fit a Piston in a sleeve and use my Special deck height tool to detirmine the deckheight and work out the CR and use the Pipet to measure the Head CC
There after I can determine if we need to fit Barrel spacers or not all depending the CR

Brandon What CR would you like your motor to be
7.1
7.5
7.9
8.2
as you will know how hard you will be driving the motor ad according I can work out the Spacing for the CR you want
Adapterplates Available for Rotary in Beetle and others aswell
And Special Boxes built for Rotary Conversions and Scubies

This is why I love dealing with you guys !

I cant believe the P(*&s did that probably sold my nice new ones!!

I follow you direction on CR reliable and more power is what I want. So not as extreme as 8.2 I would think

Your advice is what I will follow

Help 40 mm vs 34 ict's 's for 1776?

Post by 62vwbeetle »

Wow so this morning was a morning of trepidation. Bugger had called to prepare me but wanted to go make my choice surrounded by knowledge and vws so it was up primrose hill, no stop at the " view" point to see the VdubTech guys.........

So for those who have followed any of my previous posts about hp heat and performance here are the answers, @callooker @tonyz

The :bn: original builder of my motor , must have sold off the con rods I supplied, and used a lovely set of what came out of the donor car 1100 rods. Wow deck height is 8 mm hmmmmmm no wonder no compression. The new sleeves were well also rusted to :finger4u: :bn: and pistons damaged.

Cam should've been engle 110 can't identify what it is so solution is new sleeve kit arriving Friday , thanks Garin @volkspares using AA piston on a budget here got a Ghia to do too, c25 cam and correct size balanced con rods , then all back together and rolling again.

. Only debate is 40mm or little ict's what's the opinion out there

sounds like you were ripped off royally. No wonder you were dissapointed with the performance of the engine.
ICTs will work nicely, but wont come close to IDFs. 40's or 36s would be my choice.

34 ICT's for economy and some speed..

IDFs. 40's or 36s for performance.

Just remember to get the correct fuel pump.
