Have you heard the one about the 3 Brazilia ns

Post by retrovan »

Well, Have you.......

Have you heard the one about the 3 Brazilia ns

Not a common thing any where in South Africa, let alone in a small town such as Jefferys Bay

Think today we have made history, not only have we towed an Brazilia with an other Brazilia, by means of A-Frame,

BUT,

we have had 3 Brizilia parked within the same Work Shop, at the same time.

Here be proof for the non- believers.......

So When and why did this historic thing take place, I hear you all scream with excitement.....

Well it was when Johan Eagle, and myself went to collect the Cyndi bus for temporary storage, in Johan's Work Shop, till it heads back home by Transporter.

We fitted the A-Frame, and in nostalgic keeping, we slowly paraded them through Jefferys Bay, to the resting place.

In the pics, can be seen Mark and Johan with glass in hand, waiting for me to stop messing about with the camera, and drive "Fugly" to the Work Shop.

Will add some more latter.

Not just Fat, but big as well.... ...245 x 75R x 15

Running a 2000 cc Type 4 motor with two Weber 34 ICT's.

With these wheels on, she runs up any highway hill and still picks up speed. at 120 the motor just tic's over.

She looks like :bn: but runs like a F1

Nice to see all 3 at once,I have a question on the above buses do the Braziias have hub reduction, if so does that make the revs run high when on a open road compared to say a bay window.

You right Terry, Not a common sight, seeing them at the same place,

The Brazilia, has the back end of a Fleetline, and the front of a Bay, so yes, they do have reduction boxes, the only difference is that they have universal joints on their side shafts.

No, they have the same slow gearing as the Splity, but run 15" rims,

that is the reason I fitted big wheels, and 2 lt motor, to get a bit of normal speed out of the old girl.

I was not sure on the RPM at say 80 kph with the reduction hubs compared to a Bay Window, when I saw your bigger rear tyres I thought you fitted them to drop the RPM a bit.
Why I am asking is Cyndi was saying that her bus was slow, could it be that Mark had to drive it hard to get it going with a heavy load resulting in engine problems (No Offence Mark) just curious to find out,or am I barking up the wrong tree.

That could be a good call there Terry. Yes the big wheels are to enable higher speed at lower RPM.

The Splity. Fleetline, and Brazilia, have approx. the same top speed, of approx. 100 kph, but that said, can carry a load of a 1000kg.

Not sure myself, will have to look at the engine to see why, but it could be the course.

But having to add, that normally if you run an aircooled engine into the ground, you would get bearings go, piston slap, ring breakage, con rod snap, and that type of thing,

For the seal to go on its own, I have never heard of, unless there are marks on the shaft.

Mark also said that he never ran either motor higher then 80kph under its own power, he has free wheeled at higher speed.

Will let you know when we strip the engine

I was goin to comment on the speed part seeing that the bus has a 80kph sticker assuming the owner(s) were intending for the bus to remain at those speeds. But ja, it'll be interesting to hear the findings from both engines.

As the motor has to be striped I suppose the fault will determine the cause of the problem and you can go from there,my 1st thoughts would be to check oil level in the g/box to make sure it is not over full or it has not lost its oil.
But I am sure you will come across the culprit when striping the motor.
Herman mentioned that the g/box input shaft could be bent, once the motor is out you could put the vehicle in gear and jack up one wheel spin the wheel and the shaft should turn fast enough to see if it is bent by the run out of the shaft.
As you know I am no VW fundi so I could be talking out of turn here.
Good luck Herman and I hope you can get to the bottom of the problem.

If you put bigger tyres on, it would make the engine strain and labour even more. Lower gear ratios or small diameter tyres makes less work for a motor, but does limit the top speed based on the engines max rpm. This is why Vw buses have reduction gearboxes and beetles don't.

A stock fleetline with 14" tyres can cruise at 100km/h with ease all day long. The fact that Mark couldn't get this bus above 80km/h makes me think something is seriously wrong.

Herman's bus can handle bigger tyres because he has a more powerful type 4 motor installed.

Maybe Herman knows if the bus performed better with his engine in it.
