Re: What do these buses go for?
That is a Westfalia camper. They are very desireable, collectable and worth a lot more than an equivalent "ordinary" kombi.
You will find them in three flavours in SA:
1. "Tourist delivery", which means it was ordered and paid for in SA, then collected in Germany by the first owner, who then toured Europe with it before shipping it to SA. Because of the factory looking holes for reverse lights above the taillights, I suspect the bus pictured is one of these. The destination code on the M-plate (behind front passenger seat) will read TE.
2. The first 200 early bay westies sold in SA were full imports. These were all built in August 1969, the first month of the 1970 model year. They will have a destination code of SF on the M-plate.
3. After the first 200 early bay westies were sold, the rest of the SA westies were assembled in Uitenhage. These were the only Westfalia campers not assembled at Wiedenbuck. These SA westies were made from the middle of the 1970 model year until the 1973 model year. These will not have an M-plate, instead there will be a VWSA VIN plate behind the driver's seat
In 1974 VWSA offered a home-grown hardtop (no pop-top) camper to replace the ealrier Westfalias, as they had become too expensive. The 74 "Kamper" possibly had Westfalia furniture, but I've never seen one in the metal.
Westfalia was the only VW factory approved camper conversion and Westfalia campers are among the most valuable VW bus configurations out there. The SA-destined early bay westies were the first production frun of RHD Westfalia campers. Before they were made, RHD Westfalias were special order only.
