Carbs again

Post by Blitzkrieg »

How easy is it to found Weber IDFs here in SA and from what price range do they start of at?

Does anybody here have any experience with using Mikuni Carburettors from a 'bike on a Vw engine?

Is it worthwhile trying to use mikunis, i'm sure that they must be cheap to get considering the number of japanese Bikes that were sold here?

I posted on STF, got no decent response

What size IDFs are you after?? A set of 36IDFs can cost up to around 2grand, If you want new IDFs, that'll set you back around 8grand, depending on exchange rates

36 IDF's were available on the boxer Alfa motor, can still be found but good ones are hard to find, any other size you are likely not going to find, on costly import only.

I know nothing about motorcycles, but most run side draught carbs, you would idealy need carbs that are down draught to run on a aircooled motor, as space is limitted in the engine bay when it comes to making manifolds etc, just a point to remember.

Fuel injection on a Type 4 motor ('flat' configuration, like what you have in mind with your Fast Back) is relatively easy, with a complete donor system from a 2.1 wasserboxer - I've done it myself a few years ago.

Looking at al the 2.1-badged Microbus taxis running in Pretoria, with Toyota engines SOMEWHERE there should be quite a number of systems available? I'd say with some careful shopping and patience, you should be able to fit with the whole system for under R 2000. And it WORKS!!

Pine but when you say 2.1 Microbus' with Toyota engines, are that 4 cylinder engines, like we do the Subaru engine retro fit? I always thought that the Toyota 4 cyl is to a rough running (shaky) motor for a successful swap. I did try the Subby swap, not enough power, then went to a Ford V6, nice but not there yet. The bus was to tail heavy with that lot of iron hanging behind the rear wheels. Now I am in the middle of a V8 mid engine swap in my bus. Will see how I like it, I already got a supercharger in the garage if I feel I need a few more ponies. Time and money are always the big enemy here.

The best Microbus conversion by far was the Oettinger WBX 6.....

Sounded like a 911 Six

Does anyone have a list of all the parts that I should source from the Wasserboxer engine?

I've got a set of 40mm idf's available if you're interested. I might even still have a set of intake manifolds for type 4 and for type 1 lying around. :)

BTW the oettinger wbx engine would cost you 30K new about 6 years ago....
Dont forget the DLRA Dell'ortos.... They flow better than Weber of the same size and you do still find service kits etc... They also came on the Alfa's

I'm seriously thinking of Wasserboxer injection, it all boils down to price and availability, if a pair of Dell'Ortos or similar comes up, i might as well go for those...
