Uitenhage Paint Codes
I was recently looking for the correct colour that that was on my Zwitter. Couldn't find any original paint on the body.
Luckily it still had the Uitenhage manufactures plate on, paint code C201.
I tried to find out what colour this was, but nobody knew. Left it for a while and mixed Chestnut Brown. After painting the sample, I knew I had try to get the correct colour that was on the plate. Couldn't be Chestnut Brown.
At the end I started again, going first to all the old bodies I have and know what the original colour was, and after that went to look at others that was standing around.
I came to the conclusion:
C201 = Azure Blue
C301 = Pastel Green
C403 = Sand Beige
I will go and see what other codes I can find on some of the other models.
Maybe we can make a list of all the codes that is on members car's plate that are 100% sure of the colour. Maybe start a thread under Technical, Codes?
Please post what you have got.

I am trying to establish what German colour the manufacturing plate's code was referring to.
L11 is Pastel Green, C301 was used by Uitenhage. I have been on Glasurit's website before but could never find the local codes.

Re: Uitenhage Paint Codes
Dawie was also trying to compile a similar list on another thread, he might have some info, but it will be good to be able to save this info somewhere on the forum somewhere seeing that VWSA does'nt have this really basic historical info

Sambas in South Africa are good for only 2 things: showing off and sunburn.

Re: Uitenhage Paint Codes
take the fuel filler flap into the shop and ask them to match the colour to what you give them.

Re: Uitenhage Paint Codes
Can you remember the original colour of the beetle, and was it a split or oval window, perhaps you have some old family photos - this info could be useful for Jaco (jdt1976)acvwenthusiast wrote:Good evening

Re: Uitenhage Paint Codes
Remember that Uitenhage's paint codes were often tied to the year. As in code "xz" from 61 might be totally different from that same code which was reused in 76.
Please add to this thread if anyone have some info:

Re: Uitenhage Paint Codes
Thanks for the info Dawie. I didn't see your post. Was searching to see if there was any info but used the the older car colours to search. I am not too familiar with the later beetles and all buses.Dawie wrote:Remember that Uitenhage's paint codes were often tied to the year. Do you know till what year or model did VWSA used the smaller plate like in the picture?

This plate is from a 57 oval. It was never resprayed, still the original grey. When I ordered paint I took the 'glove box lid'' and asked them to see if it is Nile beige or Jupiter grey, and mix 10l of Glasurit. When I collected the paint I asked them what grey it was and they didn't know, they matched the sample. Would have been easier if I knew what grey C106 was.
Maybe you know the colour:

When I was trying to figure out C201 I asked John Lemon via Wernher Hartzenberg but he did not know either, so I don't think he has got info on the earlier colours.
I think we could get most of pre 58 colours from forum members. Wasn't too many. I am thinking of Fig's oval (if I am temember correct it was assembledhere), Splitfanatic's original oval....

Re: Uitenhage Paint Codes
Jaco,
Looks to be L225 Jupiter gray....the only issue is not knowing what the South African paint code is and not having those references.
My Oval is Jupiter grey and it was a fairly common color for Ovals in those days. Would not be a bad idea to come and visit me and and bring the radio blank with to compare the colors......the beers are served cold........super cold!!!!

Re: Uitenhage Paint Codes
AFAIK, VW in South Africa started painting cars with local paint and colours in 1960. Pre-1960 the colours seem to follow the German palette.

Re: Uitenhage Paint Codes
Jaco,
The last time they used that plate seemed to be late 59 into early 60..... My Agave green 58 has the paint code L1 on it data plate....another mystery color code or South African specific as per the C codes you figured out.

Re: Uitenhage Paint Codes
Fig,
Would have been nice if they just stuck L225 or other on the data plates pre 60.....South Africa just had to be different...as always.

Re: Uitenhage Paint Codes
Thanks for the info.
Fig, does your ragtop have the local plate on? If it has, does it have a local paint code on it?
Pierre, does your original oval have the local pate on? Then we will know what Jupiter grey's code was.
