Aircooled VW South Africa

Hi Guys,
I am trying to figure out what year/trim/motor my VW Low light D/Cab Bus is and am struggling to figure out how to go about that
I really hope you can help as I want to restore her as close to original as possible

The vin plate (found behind the drivers seat) reads as follows
268N9774
EA 300
03/57/57

The chassis # (which I found stamped onto the chassis in the engine bay)
2612236402

This appears to be conflicting info – if I look at the 1st 3 x numbers
Vin plate would imply that it is a type 2, pick up 1968
But the chassis # implies that it is a type 2 pick up 1971
Does this mean that there was maybe a “body swap”? Which appears unlikely as there are no obvious signs of tampering when you look underneath the car
The engine # doesnt really help either as it looks like this was from an "aftermarket afterthought"

Your VIN is for a 1971 pick-up. The third digit of the VIN (post-1965) tells you model year. The second digit tells you it's a pick-up, but that is all.

The 268 that is confusing you is the model number and has no reference to the year. 268 is double cab pick-up, right-hand drive, rear door on left.
