Supercharging

Is it possible to supercharge a Type1/Type 4 engine?

Superchargers can be had quite cheaply...

Just wondering...

That's what Judsons are for! But try and get your hands no an original, I double dare you!!!

As with anything that is going to make extra power, you have to have a good base motor... Dont expect to bolt it onto your stock Beetle motor and still expect it to last.... Dont take this personal... you sond a bit like me, too many interests/ideas! Wasserboxers, Type4s, hot Type1s and now superchargers!? :lol:

Judson's are a period accessory.

Chucking them onto any random old car is sacriledge (no offense; not directed towards you, Blitz').

They are not easily available, and were designed for very old engine setups. Even a 1600 is beyond it's design.

As stated, they are period addons, and aren't - and weren't very effective: at all.

Lol, hence the sarcasm :wink:

Look at the pics I posted in the "Europe shows" thread, there should be a buggy with a supercharger on there... It is a no-brainer that it can be done, but if you want it to be reliable, you need to take care ($) of the bottom end and valve train etc etc etc first. In my view, the supercharger should be the last thing you bolt on after taking care of the other stuff first....

Does this make your mouth water?

Where did you hear all that from Nick? Period accessory? Not effective? You werent even around when Judsons were easily available. I personally drove a blown 65 1200 with a 36 mm side draft for a number of years and it could run away from the 67 1500's like they were going backwards AND I never blew an engine

Also for your information, supercharging is the best most effeftive way of boosting manifold pressure on a normally aspirated motor. Not a lot of temp rise in the intake tract , like you get with a turbo, and sounds / looks good. You dont have to blow the hell out of it-- you can limit it to sea level pressure and do no damage to the motor. If you have ever travelled to the coast with your Bug , slept overnight and next morning lit it up and gone for a ride, you will know what I am talking about.
A VW has a miserable intake tract, and of all the different cars I have driven, The Bug responds to supercharging and increased atmospheric pressure the best of all of them

We had the choice of Judsons and Shorrok blowers as well. OR----- Just buy a porsche super 70 or 90 complete engine from PECO performance for half the price of a new bug

Of course we are talking "period" equipment here. Not including modern turbo's, management systems, blow off valves, waste gates, intercoolers, all which make a bug engine bay look like a plumbers nightmare
Oh yes --- and the killer heat that goes with it all!!

New mini cooper and merc C-class superchargers are popular for type 1 / 4 engines....

HtF does anyone fit an engine like that into sucha small bay Zero'? :o

I'm going on a large majority of what I've read, heard, and spoken with from other "ou toppies". :mrgreen:

Defending an subject with 'when I was around' is ageism. In this diverse country, I take offense. :D

It's unconstitutional :!:

I have a mate here who will eventually be fitting his Judson to his 1600, but with his calulations, it's more for show than go.

Like I said, what I've heard, read, and know of.

Use it, don't use it. ;)

New kit? Daft question. Of course.

Careful planning and fabrication!? If you draw an imaginary curved line from the Porsche fan to the carb, you will see this charger does actually fit inside the curved line(thanks to the pulley design, were it 'narrows'). So in this case, doesnt seem like a ad design, does it? :wink:

I suppose that it would be easier to adapt this type of 'charger to a pancake style T4 engine in a Type 3, it should be done quite easily.

A good used supercharger can be had for around R1000-R1500, just depends on where you look

A friend of mine who works for Mercedes reckons that he can get a shop soiled charger for next to nothing, I just need to get the dimensions to see how big it is...

I'd rather go turbo on a type one motor.

I have a judson supercharger at home and it's been on a 1200, 1300, 1500 and a 1600 TP and it's a nice boost in power to have and doesn't take up any extra space. They go for a quite a lot nowadays, I was offered R6000-00 from werner alker for it a few years back, but am not interested. With the magneto and the judson coil pack as well as the lubricator, you can expect upwards of 8K.

As for it being too old for a 1600 Nic? I do wish that you'd read up a bit more before posting such garbage. :lol: :lol: :wink:
