My '73 Kombi

I just bought this '73 Kombi for R 15 000...Apparently it was running when the guy bought it a year back...It doesn't look too bad for the price. Let's hope there are no major surpises...

Always a feeling of excitement just taking one home. Even if it ends up being more work than u initially thought. Look ls all straight atleast. I rate a good buy for that price

oops only noticing the engine hatch now, whats potting there, did it have a water cooled motor, does'nt look like there was a radiator fitted up front ?

Seeing the hole up front, me thinks its still has a water cooled, never the less, still a good buy.

It's fitted with a 1.6 Golf motor with the radiator in the engine compartment. We'll remove that and fit a 1600 Beetle motor which I've had for a while, and then fit a Westfalia roof which I have to convert it to a camper. I have a replacement engine compartment door as well. It will have a complete respray in blue and white. In recent times the kombi's I'm offered for below R 30 000 are generally non-runners in pretty rough state. Even with asking prices up to R 50 000 they can be dubious, so it's becoming very difficult to find a decent vehicle at a price which will allow an outlay of R 50 000 for spraywork and mechanical repairs without over-capitalising on the vehicle. Let's hope this one is as good as it looks in the photo's

The kombi arrived safely in CT with Peter Benn Transport, and thankfully there were no real surprises. Surface rust only around front window and on roof gutters. Surprisingly my mechanic managed to get it to run after fiddling for 30 mins and putting petrol into the carb...It was standing for several years. It drove forward and backwards before he tried to switch on the headlights, and burnt out a wire under the dash!

So we towed it to the auto electrician today to rewire the vehicle first - then we'll see if the Golf engine conversion is any good. If it is we'll leave it in, and then it'll go for a respray before it gets its camper conversion. I think it was a good buy...
