Imported from South Africa to Australia, but where am I from?

Hi Guys and Girls.

Richard here from Australia (maybe I should say g'day mate!)

Hoping I can pick the Aircooled VW South Africa forum members brain with a few questions. I purchased this Kombi (sight unseen) from an auction here in Australia. It was imported by a lady called Angela Deale. I would really like some help trying to find out where he's from.

I'm not sure if he's a Fleetliner? If he's from 1967 or maybe 1975? Any thoughts?

Hi Richard,

There's a lot of wierd going on there...

That is not a Fleetline. I'm not convinced that it started out life as a passenger model either. It's definitely been through a RHD conversion...

Any interior shots?

I'm not home at the moment, with my documentation, but you should be checking the Brazilian references for dating info'.

Kind regards,

Nic

Wow. That is...easily the most OTT interior I've yet come across in a bus. It would put a Rolls to shame. :D

My best guess is a late ( early to mid '70s) Brazilian model, with a RHD conversion, using several Fleetline panels (most notably, the dashboard).

There are Brazilian, German and Fleetline parts in the mix, from a range of models, including some Bay' parts. What a combo.

The safaris are obvious aftermarket items, if you were wondering.

Thanks guys.

I guess that makes sense. We've got a dog which is a mongrel so I guess that it'll fit right in.

The interior is really quite bad! We're in the process of getting an engine rebuild at the moment as the motor was stuffed!

Once that's done, we'll take a look at the interior!

Richard

Not a bad looking bus though....body looks nice and straight. The interior may need a revamp i think

Richard have a look here regarding fleetlines. Your bus looks to be in very good shape, it is def. a Brazilian export but not sure to where... What i can tell You is that if everything on the bus is original ex factory, then you have a very rare bus there. Fleetline buses all came with a 15 window configuration unlike yours. Very Interesting ! let Us know if you do find out anything about the origin please :)

Hello Richard, my name is Guilherme Chagas

As far as I can see, this truck has internal plates with Brazilian marks, but I do not know this pattern of chassis numbering here in Brazil.

I am Brazilian and I work with Kombis, if you can give me more information about, I can help you with this case.

Best Regards

Hi Merlin, just curious, how do you see that it has been trough a RHD conversion?
Please enlighten me, what am I missing here? :D

That is undoubtedly a Brazilian bus, albeit a very odd one.

Brazil is a LHD country.

Fleetline Kombis started off life in LHD pressings, which is why you'll find a 'crease' along their RHS. It's where the cargo doors were originally intended to fit. They were factory-modified.

This started out life as a LHD bus. That, and the VIN plate aside, it has several Brazilian market cues.

In fact, if you look closely at the dash, the lines are all off. I'd hazard a bet that it's entirely custom-made.

Correct, grill slots either side of the radio look too wide... Not original
