So, on closer inspection I discovered my Variant project car does not have the original engine in. I tried tracing the engine number but without any luck. Anyone have any idea what capacity this could be?
Critical missing part is the rubber bellows which connect the cooling fan's intake via ducting to air intakes on the sides.
You do not want hot used air recirculating through the cooling system.
Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.
Do'nt assume anything- (While doing fault-finding).

As years have gone by, someone may have fitted 2lt pistons and barrels as the original 1700 ones ran out.
As you have a type 4 engine in a type 3, you need to have the adapter fiberglass fitted to the engine before fitting the type 3 bellow rubber.
Impi made them but is not on the forum anymore, you will get him on the Puma watsup group.
Maybe someone here has one for you.
Good luck with your car, and keep the info and photo's coming

The picture looks lyke a type 4 in a type 4 car.
Kombi 2L engine makes 10 hp less than 1700 fuel injected engine from 411/412LE version. Even basic carbed 1700 from type 4 car had 68hp versus 2L kombi's 70hp. Fitting a low rpm low compression Kombi engine into a 412 would be a step backwards.. (miss-geared for this application, only makes car thirsty and slow.) Although if car had the lousy 3-speed automatic it might be different, if one do'nt mind paying extra for fuel.
The pictures of rubber was found on the net just to illustrate what it looks like. You could try Gerhard from Bloemfontein for spares.

But yes, you right, it is a Type 4 in a type 4.

there is plenty that can be done for extra power. But be warned, the T4 is notoriously expensive when it comes to performance parts - it is a Porsche engine after all

Im a bit of a petrolhead, so many things have massed my mind. Including a small turbo for each bank..
a small cam upgrade, a set of twin weber IDFs, a good exhaust and some head work should see you over the 100hp mark.
These engines are capable of being taken to over 3.1L in size, but they get VERY costly. Also, I dont know how much the stock cooling can keep up with this bigger power levels.
Thanks Tony. Where would one source engine parts for it, rings bearings etc? I noticed the valve stem tubes leak at the ends so I might end up opening the motor anyway.
you can still get some stock parts locally. Otherwise there are a few stored in UK, USA and Germany that carry some parts.
What do you mean by valve stem tubes?
If you are referring to the pushrod tubes, these can be removed with the engine still installed in the car - change the O-rings and install again.
