Good day all :D :D

who can tell me where is the best place to install a head temp sender and oil temp sender on 1600 beetle,
and what is to hot for the oil end to hot for the head?? :?:

As I do not believe in head temp, as they are effected by different temp. air, and not a true reflection of temp, I only installed a oil temp gauge.

This I did by drilling and tapping the drain plug as there is no other safe place to put it unless the engine is stripped and you can clean shavings.

Just make sure the thermocouple is deep into the oil or you will be reading the drain plug temp.

According to oil tech's, oil should get to above 100 Deg C every now and then to evaporate condensation.

But your aircooled will be happy to run at 110Deg,C but normally under normal load will be between 70 and 90 on freeways.

In traffic she will run about 110 to 130 Deg C therefore the need to use Diesel oil as this will take these temps constantly.

Shell Rimula R4x 15W40 is perfect for our engines

Head temp sensor has to go under the spark plug
Oil temp needs to go anywhere that oil is flowing past it and not stagnating

Yes oil that has been formulated for Diesel engines due to its high heat capacity.

As Tony Z has said , Shell Rimula R4x 15W40 is one of thous oils.

The oil sensor in the drain plug is an excellent position due to its right under the oil pick up, so oil is always moving, as said.

Is oil actually moving there Herman?
I dont really think it is.
Look at the strainer, is has a flat base with a 5mm gap between the base and the drain plug. The oil pump inlet pipe is above this flat base.
I am not convinced that you get good oil flow at the drain plug during operation. I could be wrong though.
That said, without actually going into the oil piping, I cant think of a better location for the sensor - we have to pick our evil...

Can you just explain to me way diesel oil PLS is it because the engine runs higher temp than water cooled engines
but what is the diesel oil helping for???

can a use Delo Gold Ultra SAE 15W-40

Stay away from the delo. Their old formulation was good but was changed about 3 years ago.
We want 15w40 for the viscosity.
The rimula r4x has the perfect amount of zddp for our engines. No petrol oil today has enough zddp unless you can find SL grade and then it is still touch and go.
It’s the higher zddp that we need for our engines and this is only found in diesel oils

Yes the oil can take a higher temp. as all modern cars run below 85 Deg C the oil has been formulated for this temp.

Where as Diesel oil still has the high temp. formulation.

Yes you can use Delo Gold Ultra SAE 15W-40 if you have to, but I would not.

You right about the plate, but did temp readings on it and it takes the temp of the oil almost instantly.

That is why I said to have the sensor as high as possible to get the heat transfer from the pick up flow.

And yes , where else would you put it without filling the sump with shavings.

Just as a matter of interest, when I was young, yes ...yes.. I too was young,.. I only had the Beetle and I had to tow a home made trailer for my work.

So to make sure I did not cook the engine, I had a long glass thermometer in the dipstick hole.

Drove around with it for years, even sold the car with it.

But the temp sensor as said by Tony would be a great idea, it would also be a slight delay in reading,

but that is not important as the oil will not heat that fast, and it stops the meter from fluctuating all the time and scaring the kids.

Yes the oil temp has saved my motor as I could see what it does during running in period.

Also gives a whole new understanding of how and what effects the aircooled motor, and how to drive one without being scared to cook it.

Thank you for the offer :D but i want to install a small unit that we build at my company for the underground machines,
its called ENGINE MONITORING SYSTEM :!:

It looks after the engines safeties :!: :!:
(waterlevel if there was any, alternator D+ CHARGING tells you when its not charging, engine temp can be the HEAD-200dec WATER-120dec or OIL-150dec can be two at a time, engine oil pressure and RPM for over accelerating) :hangloose:

and YES the RPM can work on the Beetle as long as there is n D+ signal it work from it? :hangloose: :hangloose:

Tony is Diesel oil not too thick for the engine.
Or is petrel and diesel oil the same?
