beatle vin number

Hi there

Can any one tell me were the fin number on a beatle chassie sits? Pine told me it should be between the handbrake lever and the selector shaft cover be, but i see nothing there, onother old man told me that it depends on the age of the beatle then it could be by the pedals or in front somewhre by the front suspension be.

Stamped on the tunnel under the backseat or on a rivet-attached plate in front of the fuel tank, under the bonnet.

I've only ever owned 1960s Beetles, and the VIN# was always stamped on top of the tunnel, just in front of the cover for the selector shaft.

They may be elsewhere on earlier or later Bugs.

I will have to remove the fiber glass top of the buggy if i want to see that plate, if it sits there by the feul tank, how does the Personel that does cor checked for that numer there?

the front one most definite not there any more on the buggy (sit on the beetle "front valance")
So it would maybe stamped on the tunnel just before the Gear rod linkage
some times there are 10 diferent owners paint and bitchum over it
