Body-to-pan seal...

Post by Merlin »

I read that there special nails that are used...I'm just wondering if that's the best option, from everyone' experience, or do I need to go find these nails?

Thanks, N.

I dont use the stock seal as it likes to leak and collect water. I use the type of foam that is sold at hard ware shops. it is about 10mm thick and has adhesive like a sticker on one side. It looks like double sided tape except thicker. no need to use nails and it seals extremely well . I have done at least 5 cars this way (for you purists once the body is installed it even bulges like the stock seal and looks factory.

BTW those nails are called Tacks and can be had from an old school shoe repaires or carpenter.\

Well that foam deteriorates over time. Ive always used the standard seal and a tube of silicon. Use some ZIP screws and screw the seal down as you go and it wont move when you put the body back on. That is what the tacks are for anyways.

Thanks guys.

I had the option of 3 versions from the store [online], and went with OEM (most expensive).

Spend once, get the best.

I have also used the stock type seal with sealant all way round on both faces of the seal, use only a little not too much needed. I also found that the seal fits better after sitting in the sun for a few hours as it becomes more flexible, it also helps if you enlarge the holes a little prior to fitting, and make sure they line up on the pan prior to dropping the body on.
