High tensile rod bolts

Post by Blitzkrieg »

Hey guys

Is there any company here in South Africa that can make up high tensile rod bolts for a reasonable amount?

The ones that ARP make are like R1700-00 a set :o

How much do you intend revving your engine? Anything under 6500 the stock bolts should be ok.

I think you have your facts wrong. CB has them listed at $7 each. you need 8. $56 = R400

I was quoted about R650-00 shipped to my door from CB for a set of ARP bolts for a type 4.

That's a brilliant price!!

The price I quoted was from a local importer, does Turbo conversions on Golfs

I think the postage was pretty rough, 250-300 of the total price cause of the weight.

I'll have a chat with IMPI and ask him if they really needed, or if they are overkill....

If you are going to ( as we know you will) excessively rev the motor fitted with 40 year old rods with new bolts, rather get a set of chromolyrods complete with ARP bolts and sleeve dowels in the caps.
Buying bolts seperately, poses a problem because the ARP's are imperial , probably 3/8'' and the rod bolt holes would probably need cleaning out, just a bit, ----but if you get it wrong--- well nuff sed!

If you really want to get clued up on rod bolt technology, read up the ARP website. Just mind BOGGELING!

a new set of replacement conrods made by SCAT to a higher than stock spec costs about $150. You can easily land them here for under R2000

Dont forget one thing. Many of the so called street racers have no idea about things, they get all their info from their mechanics and the speed and sound magazine.... sometimes having a conversation with them is just a PITA when all they talk about is Turbo this and NOS that...with no idea what they are saying. Which is why they will buy super HD rod bolts that make their engine rev higher blah blah blah for "only" R1700 for a set.

Wanna confuse a street racer??? Tell them that NOS is non-flammable. Believe it or not, it is, thats why you need to add fuel as the NOS only supplies oxygen when heated above a certain point

My 2,0 Type 4 is going to be built more for torque than all out power...

Maximum 5000 rpm

Just wanted the ARP rods for future insurance when the turbo is bolted on (A La IMPI )

BB, take a drive in IMPI's 914 porsche, that thing HAULS and I think it's a 1.7-1.8.

2.0 properly built will scare you plenty.

Yup, 1,7 litre with D-Jet EFI

I already have a 2,0 crank and rods with some other bits and pieces in my possession, slowly sourcing the rest...Going to be a fairly standard 2,0 sub with a few tricks, like a 272 SCAT cam etc etc

I'm planning on using the Type 4 EFI manifolds with a Gotech system, pretty much a replica of IMPI's engine but without a Turbo (for now  )
