Oi vey
I had so many plans with that one. Even to the point where Hannes from Witbank agreed to get the shell back to straight using some fleetline parts.
I saw the bus with Rui for the first time @ Kobus's moms house, stashed out by the back garden. I was ready to fork out R1000 for it and actually shook on it. But when the engine lid, ribbed bumpers and a few other things went missing (no fault of Kobus's). It was the mutually agreed to cancel the deal as the ribbed bumpers alone were worth what he was asking for the whole bus.
I SO wanted to fix that bus, The roof was mashed in, the bulkhead hsd come totally apart, the bus had literally split in two and the roof was holding it together. Rui actually shook his head the whole time we were looking at it.......lol.
It came from a scrap yard where it had another car parked on the roof for a while, I have a lot more pictures at home and will post them tomorrow.
He sold it on to someone, I don't know who.

Interesting story, thanks! Wonder how many Samba's went that route in SA? Was it an original red/black colour scheme?

Yup, the colour scheme looked original, I think it was agreed on the SAMBA that it was a 58. Would of been nice to see this bus in it's hayday.
