411 disks

I have the following questions about the 411 disks and calipers, hope that someone can shed some light on the matter...

1. Are they easy to find in a good condition? Or are they available new?I know of a 411 of a scrapyard not too far from me, but the disks are badly rusted and not usable.Only the calipers look decent...

2. Does the disk bolt onto a hub first, then onto a spindle?Or is it just a normal disk with no separate hub that bolts on?

3. Are brake pads still available here in SA?

4.Would these disks and calipers be a direct bolt onto the Type 3 automatic spindles (Automatics have disks as standard, so they have the caliper mountings)

Hi Blitz, from my personal 411/412 experience, I will try and answer your questions to the best of my ability

1. Not available new as far as I know (maybe Modderfontein NOS swop meet finds), but you should still be able to find used ones in a good condition at scrapyards. (We still need to go to that one near Brits, there are at least 6 411/412 wrecks there.) They'll look brand new after some skimming.

2. The disk is a single piece, which fits over the stub axle after the inner and outer wheel bearings are pressed in. They are held in place by one of those nuts that tightens by an allen key bolt onto the stub axle, like the later Beetles. (Remember the reverse thread on the left side)

3. Yes, they are still listed in part manuals. (If I recall, they were the same as Jetta II rear pads)

4. Speak to IMPI, he has bought 4-bolt drums for the rear of a Type 3, they are available new at a reasonable price, and should be a straight fit.

For a start, I will try to rescue the rusted ones from the scrapyard close to me, so that I can make a caliper bracket to fit it to the standard Type 3 drum spindle and see how it fits. After that , the search for decent used ones will start again, maybe the scrapyard at Brits or wherever...

Just be careful, scrapyard owners tend to base the price for 411 disks on the price they charge for BMW or Benz disks. Anything more than R 100.00 a set is too much!
